Place the live decoy bird in the larsen trap, if you're using one. There's a separate compartment for the decoy bird so that it can't escape when the split perch is set up. Place the decoy bird in this compartment, making sure it can reach its food and water, before closing it. [9] X Research source Rachael, the team leader, is still reeling after a double betrayal by her lover and boss, Peter Kemp. Anne, a botanist, sees the survey as a chance to indulge in a little deception of her own. And then there is Grace, a strange, uncommunicative young woman, hiding plenty of her own secrets. Put water and food in the trap for the live decoy bird and crows. If you're using a decoy bird, fill 2 separate metal dishes with food and 2 metal dishes with water. Choose foods that are safe for crows to eat like raw grains, nuts, worms, or fruits. Place one of each dish in each bird compartment so that both the decoy bird and crow can eat and drink. Rachael is the first to arrive at the cottage, where she discovers the body of her friend, Bella Furness. Bella, it appears, has committed suicide – a verdict Rachael refuses to accept. Set up the trap so the split perch is holding open the door. The larsen trap should come with a perch for the crow that’s split in half. Prop the two parts of the perch up so that they’re aligned and holding open the trap door. This will make it easy for a crow to land on the perch and fall into the trap. [10] X Research source If 2 days pass and you still haven’t caught a crow, move the trap to a different spot to see if it works there. Introducing the Vera character so late in the novel was a mistake; you don’t wait until the end to introduce the detective in a detective series! Many agreed that Vera is a very unlikable character, a real “witch,” with others pointing out that she had to really fight hard to find her place among a male dominated society–especially difficult in rural police force. If she had been a male character, perhaps her “rough edges” would have been more kindly taken, such as just being “grouchy” or “crusty” rather than witchy. But the members who didn’t like Vera, really didn’t like her! “A witch”“A mooch”“amusing but too hard to like to get into story” Remember The Trap Man gives you E mail help for as long as you own your trap, just quote your invoice number. The characters themselves, though, were distinctly written-a real challenge. All three women were distinct with different degrees of likability, sympathy, mistrust, etc. Although again the group was split–some liked the tension building up between the three women, others felt it was very “sophomoric.” Vera investigates when an old associate, Bella Furness, is found bludgeoned to death in the barn of her farmhouse. Environmentalist Ann Preece, who discovered the body, denies having a motive for murder. Suspicion falls upon Bella's stepson, Neville, who stands to inherit the land on which the farmhouse is located. His connections with a local building firm, who plan to demolish the farmhouse to build an access road for a new quarry, further complicates Vera's investigation. Meanwhile, Vera is confronted by a bereaved mother whose son disappeared whilst up at the farmhouse several years previously. As a complex love triangle involving several of the prime suspects begins to unravel, a second murder throws suspicion upon the identity of Bella's killer, and links between the three cases begin to emerge, suggesting a possible motive for murder.
