Size is a bit of an issue, but the Switch does let you play full-sized console games on a 6.1-inch 720p screen. It’s by far the most powerful mainstream handheld game console ever released. But, with great power comes so-so battery life. The Switch can last up to five hours per charge depending on your screen brightness, and which game you’re playing. Complex, better-looking games will tax the system more, so you’ll get less playtime. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas on the PSP is not a port of the original, but actually, a completely different game sharing the same name. The original game was a blast to go through at the time, featuring over-the-top action gameplay laden with elements that made the series an icon. The company says it gets up to 10 hours of battery life per charge, which is more than enough time to play through a good chunk of a long Japanese Role Playing Game without having to stop. If your collection of Super Nintendo games has started to gather dust, and you want an easy, convenient way to play them on the couch, Hyperkin’s SupaBoy is a solid solution. Oddly enough, the PlayStation Portable (PSP) is considered a “failure” in certain circles, mainly because despite Sony’s superior hardware, the Nintendo DS had almost double its sales. However, Sony’s handheld device enjoyed a longer run and sold about 82 million units worldwide making it the third on the list of highest selling handheld device and 8th in the rank of highest selling video games of all time.

Hyperkin bundles the SupaBoy with a carrying case, wrist strap, and video out cables that let you play your Super Nintendo games on a TV. This makes it the equivalent of a retro-only Nintendo Switch. Its built in screen is only 4.3 inches wide, and allows you to play games in their original 4:3 aspect ratio. You can stretch the sprites to play your games in 16:9 wide-screen mode, too.

The Switch’s hybrid nature is great, but the system is much larger than a traditional handheld gaming system when its two controllers (they’re called Joy-Con) are attached to its sides. Platypus is an obscure horizontal shmup that a few have heard of, but if you’re a fan of shmups, you already have heard of this one. Originally developed by Retro64, a small team consisting of 3 developers. Platypus was one of their first games before they were acquired by PopCap Games. Since then, nothing new came out of them.While it reigned supreme, the PSP enjoyed its fair share of shooting games. From simple shmups (shoot ’em ups) and third-person shooters to large-scale first-person shooters. At the time, the idea of playing one’s favourite shooters on a handheld was uncommon. However, the PSP alongside its fearsome rival, the DS, proved that the idea is possible if done right. Coded Arms: Contagion is probably Konami’s answer to giant shooters like Halo, Wolfenstein and GoldenEye 007. Its non-stop action shooting gameplay alongside the tight controls makes Coded Arms: Contagion a fun-to-play hidden gem on the system. If you’re of a certain age, you probably have fond memories of handheld video game systems. The technology has changed a lot, but handheld gaming consoles remain as popular as ever, thanks to both a wave of nostalgia and an increased demand for portable play and connectivity. Call of Duty: Roads to Victory is a spin-off of the critically acclaimed Call of Duty 3 released in 2006. Much like its predecessor, Call of Duty: Roads to Victory takes soldiers to the battlefield as they experience World War 2 on the go.The system’s rollout for 2004-2005 was a huge success despite initial concerns that the price was too high considering the fact that it was a handheld device. The lifespan of the system lasted for more than a decade, with lots of other newer versions of it released between the year 2005 and 2011. After a while, the PSP became out-dated and the PS Vita was introduced to replace it, but a lot of core gamers still own and play it, because easily run it with homebrew software. Like the DS before it, the “New” Nintendo 2DS XL’ main feature is its dual screen design, which features a 4.88 inch display on top, and a 4.18 inch touch display on the bottom. This system differentiates itself from previous versions of the Nintendo 3DS (the two systems are part of the same family) by having a faster processor and second analog “nub” above the A,B,X, and Y buttons. The nub allows you to control the camera in some games, which makes the experience of playing games on a “New” 2DS XL more similar to a modern home console.

The Nintendo Switch comes with 32gb of internal storage which is enough to hold a dozen or so games — how many games it can hold depends on their size — but speaking from experience, you’ll want more space.
