About this deal

While neither of the Theta cameras are particularly designed with shooting video in mind, there is a clear difference between them. The Theta Z1, even with the larger sensors, is unable to match the quality of its video with its photos. Limited to 4K, the resolution of the Z1 video is disappointing and there’s little in the way of stabilization or shooting modes. I wouldn’t recommend using this camera for any serious video work. The previous top end Ricoh Theta camera, the Theta Z1, became an extremely popular choice for shooting Virtual Tours. The Z1 has been consistently in high demand for the past few years as shooting VR tours became more and more popular in several industries. The Theta X is a response to that increasing demand and is primarily designed as a virtual tour camera. The number of photos that can be taken is a guide based on RICOH’s measurement method. The actual number differs according to usage conditions.

Ricoh launches the RICOH THETA X 360-degree camera

I might just be expecting too much from these products but for the type of shots like, tight spaces with things happening basically, DSLR capture won’t work. The Z1 ( review here) has a distinct advantage thanks to its dual 1 inch sensors. The larger the sensor in a lens the more light it can take in and, generally, the better quality image can be produced. The Z1 is the only 360 camera out right now with such large sensors. For a video shot while moving, you can display the route you moved, and play it like a hyperlapse video to the selected point. Also, will they be able to improve the stabilisation through firmware upgrades, or is it a hardware limitation?

Added a function for posting videos shot with the RICOH THETA (model: RICOHTHETA m15) to theta360.com. Does the smaller sensor in this new camera mean that there is another camera yet to drop from Ricoh?

The RICOH THETA X takes still images at 11008×5504 and video at a resolution of 5760×2880 at 30 frames per second. I really want to like this camera because there is just not much on the market for enthusiast still shooters like me. To be honest, the samples in this article don’t look that good. Compression artifacts, poor detail, CA. Are they compressed for hosting? Do you know if there are straight out of camera samples available (I haven’t been able to find any).
