It is looking increasingly like there is just one adult barn owl provisioning the two remaining Lorton Meadows owlets now. Our super Visitor Centre volunteers and staff have been analysing the footage from the nest box regularly this week and a story is starting to emerge. A variety of prey has been arriving, and this has included not only staple food like field voles, but also young rats and a starling. The oldest of the owlets gulped this down beak first in the early hours of the 9/10 June. Starlings are fairly long legged, and the sight of our young owl struggling to get everything down, including the legs and feet was hilariously gruesome. Alton can only be observed while he and Olivia are raising their babies. Usually, he starts to hang around beginning in January and February to court Olivia and then provides food for her and the babies once they are born. Alton rarely goes inside the nest box, unless he is being chased by Blue Jays. 🙂The Barn Owl is a distinctive and much loved countryside bird. Barn Owls can be found throughout the UK and Ireland and are easily identified with their heart shaped face and pure white underparts. They hunt small mammals such as mice, voles, shrews, rats, muskrats, hares and rabbits, and they may also prey on small birds.
