Description

Each new face is accompanied by a gorgeously painted portrait that looks as if it's been stroked onto a canvas by a hopped-up Francis Bacon. Like the Welsh countryside he writes about, Thomas's poetry is often harsh and austere, written in plain, somber language, with a meditative quality. Runcie describes Thomas's style as consisting of "simple words and short nouns, nouns of such authentic meaning that they rarely need modifiers, moving as beats at a controlled pace in stress accent metre—a constant technique to effect a constant tone, his own inexhaustibly haunting tone that lingers like sounds in a darkness." Writing in Eight Contemporary Poets, Calvin Bedient also notes this spare style, claiming that "Thomas puts little between himself and his subject.... His poems are ascetic.... To seem at once lean and sensuous, transparent and deeply crimsoned, is part of his distinction." Thomas reveals his stylistic intentions in Words and the Poet:"A recurring ideal, I find, is that of simplicity. At times there comes the desire to write with great precision and clarity, words so simple and moving that they bring tears to the eyes." Harry and his partner are confronted by his old squad upon their return to Martinaise. They reflect on Harry's actions during the game, particularly whether he solved the case and how he handled the mercenaries. Lieutenant Jean Vicquemare, Harry's usual partner, confirms that Harry's emotional breakdown was the result of his fiancé leaving him years ago. In the best possible outcome, the squad expresses hope that Harry's state will improve in the future, and invites him and either Kim or Cuno to join a special RCM unit. Every new book by R.S. Thomas is a revelation. There is no other voice like his, no other poet who releases the silence out of which language is wrought, and against which its truth echoes. In his eighties at the time of writing, the prophet is not wearied, but still asking difficult questions in his poems. For him, there is no truce with the furies.
