Thanks to its lowly 720p video resolution, the 112 doesn’t deliver video quality at anything like the level of its 512GW sibling. Not surprisingly, the detail is very noticeably less, and although you can make out large text, you can’t read number plates unless viewed at close proximity and low speed. Overall, this is some of the weakest dashcam image quality we have seen. So you’re looking to hop onto the dash cam wagon, but you’re short on cash. Very short. So short, in fact, that only the cheapest of the cheap will do. Where do you look? Whilst the answer to that question may have eluded you before now, we’re happy to inform you that you’re already in the right place.

If the Dash Cam does not appear as a drive on your PC, please press the reset button on the underside of your Dash Cam and try all the USB ports on your computer. Surprisingly, considering the price of the 112, Nextbase has equipped it with a magnetic mounting system. This isn’t quite as seamless as the magnetic system we see on premium sat-navs such as the TomTom GO 520. But it still works quite well. The 112 slides into place and is held there by magnets. Honestly, it’s impressive how much the Nextbase 112 gets right for its incredibly low cost. Despite it’s understandably low image quality the user interface makes sense, the mount works well and the G-Sensor functions as intended. We don’t want to say you shouldn’t buy this device, but there is one caveat. With inbuilt G-Sensors you can be sure that any impact recording will not be deleted and 120 degreewide angle lens it really is your own independent witness in full 720p high definition. But when we tried it for ourselves, the dash cam we tested was a complete letdown, failing to recognise movement even at the highest sensitivity level.A MicroSD card slot is used for recording, and no media is included. However, at the top quality setting a 16GB card should be enough for around 112 minutes of footage. Once the memory card is full, as with most dashcams the 112 will begin to loop recordings, deleting the oldest files and replacing them with the new ones as they are captured. The device, rather unexpectedly, also comes with a parking mode. This uses the G-Sensor to detect an impact even when stationary, and switch on the device’s recording mode to (hopefully) catch a glimpse of whoever or whatever hit your vehicle. Unfortunately, the battery life of the 112 is only around 30 minutes, so it will struggle to stay alive long enough to make this mode really count.

For recording during the daytime, this Nextbase model is just about passable - you can make out number plates from five to 10 metres away. Things get a little ugly when the sun goes down, though, with the Nextbase 112 suffering from a drop in sharpness.
