I've been on the journey. I remember those days when Numan was pilloried by the music press (yes they actually mattered in those days), the later days when he was almost universally ignored and his records barely charted. And the days when he was justly feted by such luminaries as Trent Reznor, Marilyn Manson & Damon Albarn. it's hard to talk about a Gary Numan release in 2017 and use words like 'relevant' or 'important'. Like virtually all artists nowadays who had their salad days pre-2000, Numan is oft cited as a pioneer or influence, but it's doubtful that his audience has expanded much as he inches toward his 60th birthday. He has a fanbase that has either stayed with him from the beginning or joined after his stylistic and career re-invention as Trent Reznor's cool uncle in the mid-90s. Numan's transition to Electro-Industrial seemed natural enough considering the android coldness of his personae and his dystopian worldview. And during that time when Nine Inch Nails and the like were enjoying some popularity, it allowed him to expand his market beyond those clinging to the "Replicas/Pleasure Principle/Telekon"-era. The first single ' My Name Is Ruin' is simply geni­us and deservedly the album's fig­ure­head. Is it radio-com­pat­ible? Hard to say, but who cares about it any­ways? Well I guess it was kinda inevitable, I absolutely adore the early work of Gary Numan (including Tubeway Army), and I have gained a growing, if remote, interest in what this fine musician has been up to in the past few years. So when that a brand new release was coming in 2017, I thought why not... All of the drums on Savage are electronic – there are no acoustic or acoustic-sounding drums at all. Once the lyrical content started to flow and Gary had decided on the ‘concept’, lots more ideas on the production front started to flow. For example, we used a lot of war-type tribal drums and thunderous cinematic toms to get that feeling across of the music being post-apocalyptic.
