About this deal

Zimmerman, Aaron (July 7, 2016). "The "Board Game of the Year" winners have been announced". Ars Technica . Retrieved October 7, 2017. Your partner might see it as a green agent, in which case your partner covers it with a green agent card. The timer token should be put on top of the agent card to remind you of what happened on the earlier turn. If you have not won the game after using your last timer token, you play a sudden death turn. Both players may guess, but no clue is given. If anyone makes an incorrect guess, you lose the game. If you play Codenames with large enough teams, the operatives can discuss what words the clue might be associated with. When you have people with particularly creative minds, it can become far-fetched and downright hysterical. What’s more, the other team (operatives and spymaster) can try to muddy the waters of the opposition’s guesses by pointing out additional words and how they could relate to the clue. Now you are free to take any mission connected to Prague. (Your choices are Berlin, Cairo, or Moscow). Here's what the numbers next to each mission mean: Mission Parameters

How to play Codenames Duet | Official Rules | UltraBoardGames

Codenames and Codenames Duet are based on the same fundamental concept: Players work to guess certain keywords—and avoid others—by coming up with single-word clues. Both have some elements of strategy without being overwhelming or difficult to teach. The original Codenames can be played with as few as two people (more on that later), but really plays better with four or more (per the box it can accommodate “eight plus,” hence its party-game reputation), while Duet is designed for two players. You are allowed to give a clue for only one word (cashew: 1 ) but it's fun to try for two or more. Getting four words with one clue is a big accomplishment. One Word Note: You cover a green word with a green agent card even if it wasn't one of the words you meant. Do not let your partner know. You should act like you meant that word.If your partner touches a word you see as tan, mark it with a timer token. Take a token from the time bank and place it on the word card, bystander side up, with the arrow pointing from you to your partner. The guessing side may discuss their guess, but they should not say anything that would reveal information about their side of the key card. As always, the guess is official only when one of the guessers touches the word card. Though each game has limitations in terms of the number of people who can play, I think they’re well worth the restrictions. If you’re totally new to the game, I’d suggest starting with original Codenames, as its game play is simpler—unless you anticipate only having two players available, in which case Codenames Duet is the way to go. Use the mission map the way that is the most fun for you. Perhaps you will find a few favorite missions and replay them again and again. Perhaps you will push outward, trying to complete them all. The lines under the map can be used to keep notes on your failures and successes.

If everything goes well, your partner will guess as many words as you indicated by your clue and then stop. But your partner may choose to quit early. It is also legal for your partner to take additional wild guesses, but we don't recommend it. Next Turn Accents, vocal inflections, and singing are not allowed. Don't say pancake in a French accent as a clue for FLAT and NAPOLEON. And don't look up the French word for FLAT. The only foreign words allowed are those you would use in an English-language conversation. (Crepe is okay). You can't say any form of a visible word on the table. If HIDE is visible, you can't say hid, hidden, or rawhide. But hideous is still okay. A word is "visible" until it is covered by a green agent card or two timer tokens representing an incorrect guess from each side. A word marked as an incorrect guess from only one side is still considered visible.Leonardo da Vinci, IRS, New South Wales, Boxing Day, The Lord of the Rings, moth-eaten, and guinea pig might all be good clues, but they break the rule that a clue must be one word. Teams take turns. The starting team is indicated by the 4 lights on the edges of the key card. Giving a clue The biggest downside of Codenames is that you need both versions if you want to play with only two (Duet) or up to eight players, maybe more (regular version).

In Codenames Duet each team is trying to get the other team to guess a number of words based on one-word clues. You are working together to find all of the spies before either running out of time or running into one of the dreaded assassins. It is a gaming table for you and your online friends. It does not find you players to play, neither plays it automatically – it sets up the game for you according to your preferences, lets you invite your friends, and then it allows the joined players to interact with the game. The best is if you and your fellow players gather using your favorite online communication tool, like you would gather around a real table. Then you just send them the link that can be found under the Players button. Codenames: XXL was released in June 2018, Codenames: Pictures XXL in November 2018, and Codenames: Duet XXL in May 2019. They are all the same as their respective original games, except for the fact that they use a larger format and double-sized cards. [5]Middle: 1 is not a valid clue for the word in the middle of the table. S: 3 is not a valid clue for three words that begin with S. When a correct clue is guessed, a green agent card is placed over the word and a time token is taken. The team can then go on to select another word if they wish. If an incorrect clue is guessed that team’s turn ends. If the incorrect clue is not an assassin, a bystander token is placed on the card pointing at the team that missed the guess. If an assassin is ever selected the game ends in a loss for all players. Each mission has two parameters. The first number is the total number of turns. When setting up a mission, put this many tokens in the time bank and leave the rest in the box. Moscow uses only 8, while Berlin uses all 11. Cairo uses 9, just like the standard Prague mission. Some of our playtesters preferred a variant where the two players do not have to take turns. You can allow a player to give two clues in a row, if you like. But then the other player should give a clue. To give all clues from one side before even starting to give clues from the other side is not in the spirit of the game. Some Things To Remember When using the mission map, an incorrect guess might use up two timer tokens. This happens if you exceed the acceptable number of incorrect guesses. If you have only one token when you must give up two, you skip the sudden death turn and lose the game.

I’m not sure if it’s my imagination, but the included words also seem to link together less, resulting in less impressive turns and even longer thinking time. Of course, you can freely swap over or mix the words with other Codenames games to add an insane level of variability to your 25-word grid. Each turn you have to give your partner a two-part clue, one word and one number. The word should be a link between words on the grid that are agents, while the number is the number of words that need to be guessed. Your partner then guesses as many words as they like one by one, if they guess an agent you cover the word with a green agent card and may continue guessing. If it’s an assassin, the game ends as a loss.
