About this deal

By using different manufacturing processes, sheep wool can be made to perform in different ways to provide a range of functions around the building.

This is to ensure easy measuring, installation and removal of your Chimney Sheep®. It also means the end of the handle can be seen in the fireplace, stopping anyone inadvertently lighting a fire with your Chimney Sheep® in place. A scenario you definitely want to avoid! However, you don’t have to measure the nearest opening. You could measure further up if it’s slightly narrower further up your flue. It’s quite fiddly measuring further up but you’d be able to get a smaller Chimney Sheep® (with some extension rods). It doesn’t really matter where you choose! Your Chimney Sheep will still work in the same way, wherever it sits in your chimney. It is also important to choose a product that still allows for a degree of ventilation. This will prevent any damp issues from occurring. Some, such as The Chimney Balloon, feature small vents, while natural products made from wool are breathable by their very nature. Farming on the Romney Marsh in Kent, Kristina and Paul Boulden run a mixed enterprise with arable crops, cattle and sheep. Those are the three types of insulation, which can be applied in walls, floors and ceilings. There are also some effective wool underlay products in the SilentWool range. The other brilliant thing about our sheep wool insulation products is that there are no plastic additives. Many of the other sheep wool insulations on the market have around 25% of plastic fibre added to give it “loft” and make it perform effectively as insulation. What you don’t want is for your expensive insulation to squash down over time and stop being effective. The plastic fibres help to keep it lofty and continue to perform as insulation. Alex Lehner, the engineer who developed the Ionic Protect®, wanted his sheep wool insulation products to be 100% wool and 100% effective over time. He developed a way of manufacturing it that ensured the wool insulation remained lofty over the lifetime of the product without the necessity for any additives. If your fireplace doesn’t have a damper and you’re looking to stop those cold drafts from coming down the chimney then look to use a Chimney Sheep. We’ve found that ours works really well.

No chemicals are used in the construction or the functioning of the filter. Fibre retention is based solely on physical retention with the help of clever patent-pending technology. We’re delighted to add a range of excellent sheep wool insulation products to our range. Wool is a remarkable natural material with a range of properties depending on how you process it and where you apply it. Having wool around the home makes it a healthier and more enjoyable environment. Over the years, alongside our wonderful Chimney Sheep®, we have worked to curate our own range of household and garden items that are both practical and effective. Where possible our products are made from recycled, sustainable or natural materials. Our shop has everything from draught excluders to insulation, laundry products to natural gardening items and we always have our thinking caps on as to what we can add next.Works in the summer – a Chimney Sheep® prevents hot air from entering your home and retains air-conditioned air, keeping your house cool in the summer.

Reduces air pollution in the home – a Chimney Sheep® reduces the number of air changes in a property so considerably reduces the amount of air pollution that enters the home. As this warm air rises, it needs to be replaced. So cold air is pulled in, usually from around doors and windows, creating the chilly draught that you can feel (and hear when it’s windy). Just as when draught proofing a front door or your windows, there are many different products on the market designed to prevent heat loss from the chimney. The Chimney Balloon is made from plastic, and is designed to be inflated, using a pump or by blowing into a pipe, to fill the chimney and prevent cold air from coming in and warm air from travelling up and out. The postage cost for the return will need to be covered by yourself (please keep the proof of postage until your return has been processed).

Installation

A Chimney Balloon is a good option for some circumstances. In fact, The Chimney Balloon Co is actually our sister company, so we like them a lot! They are great if you have a fireplace you don’t use because once in place they are a bit fiddly to take in and out. The Chimney Sheep® is easy to put in and take out as many times as you like so better suited to a fireplace that is being used regularly. We would also recommend a Chimney Balloon if you have a traditional Victorian fireplace surround with a damper flap as they are much easier to get into the chimney flue than a Chimney Sheep® would be. If you do go for an inflatable Chimney Balloon we would always say to avoid going for a universal sized balloon because they will not fit all sized chimneys and therefore won’t be as effective! We’d also suggest going for one from The Chimney Balloon Co as it is the only inflatable chimney draught excluder on the market that isn’t made of PVC. If you were to accidentally light a fire with a PVC balloon in place, it would give off chlorine gas fumes which can be quite dangerous. The wool is naturally breathable and will allow some air to permeate through. If you have a problem with damp in a chimney it may be that the warm damp air is rising into the flue then condensing on the cold walls higher up. The Chimney Sheep® will prevent this warm air from rising so should cut off this source of damp. If you have a very damp home then you should look at whether it’s properly ventilated, but usually chimneys are a source of uncontrolled ventilation and consequently provide a bit too much of it. You can also choose to have glass doors fitted to the opening of your traditional fireplace and provide a barrier between the fireplace and the room to help prevent cold drafts. Chimella is designed to turn the air around in the chimney. It features tiny gaps so there’s sufficient ventilation and you don’t get any damp,’ explains Simon Wild. The filter must be placed outside the washing machine on the drain hose. It should not be raised above the height of the drain hose exiting the washing machine. The hose length should be held to a minimum. Raising the filter and a long drain hose will both reduce the efficiency of pumping and filtering and should be avoided.

You’ll need to size up the internal area of your chimney and choose the right size chimney balloon to provide a good seal. 3) Draft Excluders The felt head of a Chimney Sheep® usually lasts about 10 years and is 100% wool which means it is completely biodegradable and compostable. The handles are made with recyclable plastic therefore are extremely durable and designed to last for decades. We have designed them so that when the felt head does wear out, you can just replace it with a new felt head and keep the same handle to reduce waste and the use of excess plastic. When the time comes and you have to say goodbye to your felt head, get in touch with us.The Chimney Balloon was started up by an engineer in the 1980s, although many other companies have since set up offering similar products. In 2017, The Chimney Balloon Co. was bought by Chimney Sheep Ltd and although the products they offer are different they now work together.
