Description

Tools may be cleaned by using white spirit. Any spillage should be wiped off surfaces before the bitumen paint has set. There are several types of liquid waterproofing paints. Bitumen, Acrylic, Latex Polymer, Polyurethane, liquid asphalt and so on. The first thing you should look for is the data sheet stating the product is UV stable. The ability to withstand the suns rays over time. Where you have changes in direction and protrusions you are advised to apply a reinforcing textile tape between each coat of the top coat.

Prepare the surface well by removing dust, oil, grease, old coatings and surface contaminants. A primer is not usually needed with bitumen paint but occasionally for additional protection of bare metal surfaces, prime with Zinc Rich Primer or Metal Primer. Use fast dry etching primer for non-ferrous metals. It’s frequently used on metal guttering, fire escapes, stairways, ladders, railings and fences. In the marine sector, bitumen paints are commonly used on boat hulls. So, the key is all about thorough preparation, a good quality primer, the use of reinforcing tape and two good, high build-up coats of your liquid membrane. Any of the types I have listed above are suitable. You can take the tiles off to find internal leaks, and roofing tar can seal the leak in the inner ceiling. Roofing tar can perform better with support from material such as a piece of shingle or plywood. Is roof tar and roof cement the same?

White Spirit:

By using one of our nationwide approved contractors for our products you enable yourself to take advantage of our guarantees, life expectancies and warranties. This means if we say our system is going to last a certain amount of time, or perform in a certain way and it doesn’t, you’re covered. Usually cheaper than many other coatings offering similar weather proofing performance, it’s an economical option

You can also find gloss and trim paints for wood and other features, undercoat paints to prime surfaces perfectly, and tough Kitchen & Bathroom paints for surfaces with heavy use in spaces that experience high temperatures and moisture. It can’t be emphasised enough, weather-proofing and damp proofing helps prevent damage to a property. Moisture ingress can potentially result in timbers rotting and long term structural damage. Bitumen paint is usually long lasting. If applied to a porous surface like masonry it will last longer than when applied to less porous surfaces, especially those subject to long hours of extremely hot sun. What is the best solvent for bitumen? Before applying bituminous paint, make sure all surfaces are clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, rust, mill scale and other contaminants. You may need strong cleaning agents or detergents to remove grease, oil or organic materials. Finally, remove any loose or blistered existing paints before applying a bituminous paint. (For more on this topic, see: Substrate Surface Preparation for Corrosion Prevention.) In the UK alone, there are hundreds. if not possibly thousands of different brands and types of Bitumen based damp proofing and waterproofing products. It is our experience that quite often, given Bitumen based products are ‘commodity’ products, the cheapest brands are selected. Also known as dimethyl ketone, 2-propanone, and beta-ketopropane, Acetone is commercially manufactured but is also found naturally in plants, trees and in humans (as a by product of metabolism). A versatile solvent, acetone has many uses including thinning polyester resin, vinyl and adhesives. It is also useful in preparing surfaces such as metal, and wood prior to painting. Acetone is a good solvent that is a component of some paints and varnishes as well as for most plastics and synthetic fibres. Once you've gone through both steps, apply the bituminous paint to the entire surface evenly and in as many coats as required—but note two coats is the recommended minimum. For best practice, it is also advisable to maintain an ambient temperature (minimum 10 degrees Celsius) in warm and dry conditions. Applying Bituminous Paints and Coatings
