Double binding poles: The EVO 4.1 Bookshop speaker has two sets of binding stations that are connected to jumper plates. The binding piles are suitable for bare thread (up to 10AWG), pin connections, spade connections and banana plugs (single). With the help of these double binding poles you can bi-amping the speakers or bi-wires. BI cabling or bi-amping the speaker ensures a better performance of the low and high tones. AMT (Air Motion Transformer) Inverter: The Wharfedale EVO 4.1 Bookshelf speaker uses a specially designed 1,1875" x 2,375" AMT (Air Motion Transformer) transducer for his own silky high frequency reproduction. The design of the AMT makes it possible to move a higher air volume during implementation than with a conventional soft dome tid. This higher pressure, which is stimulated by the principles of the AMT design, offers improved HF display of point sources with lower deformation properties than conventional tweeters. This is reflected in the stunning and pure brightness of the musical performance of all EVO 4.1 bookshelf speakers. Switching to John Batiste and Cory Wong's extensive improvisation Meditation, where the space around the notes is almost as vital as the notes themselves, the Evos again do a wonderful job illuminating the long ambient reverb tails of guitar and piano as they wrap around each other. Once in a while it is good to have a "control" to see if these ears are operating to spec. I started playing the EVO 4.1 and was surprised that I heard no brightness at all! If anything there was good bit of bass emphasis. I walked up to the speaker and put my ear next to AMT tweeter and as I expected, it was not playing. In the process of moving the speaker from measurement lab to listening room and tightening the bi-wire post, one had moved out of position so tweeter was disconnected. The woofer plays high enough frequency that the tweeter not being there did not have an immediate effect. But man, did putting it in the circuit did. There was dramatic amount of high frequency content and brightness. It's striking that when we start playing Dune in 5.1 on the Evo 4.4 surround system, it immediately prompts us to question whether there is any need for Dolby Atmos. Of course, there is, but it’s a great reminder that if you have quality speakers capable of detailed precision and fluid transparency, you don’t need to go all-in on rears and height channels to have a seriously immersive home system.

The Wharfedale Evo4.1 bookshelf speakers incorporate technology derived from the flagship Elysian series, featuring a 2-way speaker design. A newly designed AMT (Air Motion Transformer) high frequency transducer replicates point-source audio, and is capable of moving large amounts of air for lower distortion and highly accurate musical reproduction. The new EVO4 represents the dawn of a new standard in hi-fi, from Wharfedale – the most famous name in British loudspeakers. Measurements that you are about to see were performed using the Klippel Near-field Scanner (NFS). This is a robotic measurement system that analyzes the speaker all around and is able (using advanced mathematics and dual scan) to subtract room reflections (so where I measure it doesn't matter). It also measures the speaker at close distance ("near-field") which sharply reduces the impact of room noise. Both of these factors enable testing in ordinary rooms yet results that can be more accurate than an anechoic chamber. In a nutshell, the measurements show the actual sound coming out of the speaker independent of the room. You possess more loudspeakers than you know. Consider your telephone, the television, a personal computer or iPad. Often a helping hand makes an impact. This is a bookshelf speaker. But, it isn't mandatory to place it on the shelf, any elevated table will suffice. Bookshelf speakers provide clear, sharp audio. In lots of spaces, they improvethe audio delivery too. They need significantly less space than floor speakers but should be deliberately placed (like at ear level) for the best output. Great Audio at a Great PriceStanding at the height of 616mm, the Wharfedale EVO4.1 Stands metalwork is laser cut from high-grade stainless steel. This precision design means the stand is sold in stature and the stability is optimised. This considered engineering reduces vibrations and resonance of the speaker’s cabinet by effectively isolating the speaker from the floor and surroundings. The ensured result is a massively improved loudspeaker performance.

I often listen to music using Grado SR125e headphones, a sound that I like very much. These have a much closer tonal balance to the Mission speakers. The Evos have a tonal balance similar to my Sky sound box, which if you've ever used to play music is just awful. I'm not saying the Evos sound anything like it, it's just a similar tone. The Evo 4.1 speakers are modelled on the technologies and concepts seen in Wharfedale's highly acclaimed Elysian speakers. Emphasising on incorporating Air Motion Transformer technology in the speakers, the Evo series offer a high quality sound with low distortion guaranteed. The AMT driver provides low distortion and enhanced dynamics. Designed for any taste The attractive EVO 4.1 bookshelf speakers of Wharfedale offer quality sound as a stand-alone stereo couple, or as a front speakers in a surround sound system. A good couple of tripods helps improve the sound of your speakers by giving them a stable, vibration-free platform. It also places them at ideal listening height. Bowers and Wilkins 606 - I was unimpressed with these speakers which seemed to have a rather mechanical treble, although the mids had the best detail of the speakers I listened to. Bass was decent but the imaging was flat Tying everything together is a fine sense of timing that results in surefooted rhythms and the ability to present a mass of instrumentation as a cohesive and musical whole. The longer we listen, the less we find ourselves analysing the sound, and the more we simply enjoy the results.

Looking Good, Sounds Great

Born out of the extensive research and development process that led to the Elysian series, the Wharfedale EVO 4 Series borrows much of the technology involved. This makes the EVO 4 series known as one of the best in its price range. The combination of the AMT tweeter and dome midrange delivers much in the way of resolution and transparency. These speakers sound impressively articulate through these frequencies and deliver vocal-led music such as Mount The Air from The Unthanks brilliantly. There’s nuance and texture in voices that helps to communicate emotions really well.

Brushed metal spikes sit neatly within the plinths of the Evo 4.4s and Evo 4.2s, and all the speakers feature two sets of terminals for bi-wiring, with brushed metal straps for non-bi-wired set-ups. Placement in the home theater: the EVO 4.1 can be used as front and / or surround speakers in a home cinema application. When used as a front speakers, they must be placed at the same distance on either side of the television screen (6.5 to 13 'apart) and placed on ear height. The front speakers must be placed slightly diagonally (22 ° to 30 °) so that they are directed to the main listening space. But audiosciencereview completely disagrees on the fact that this is a quality speaker and comes with the following conclusion about the 4.1 . EVO4 marries the low distortion motor system developed for the ELYSIAN bass units to a Kevlar cone. Woven Kevlar (the material of bullet-proof vests) is a superior material for woofer cones. It is both stiff, ensuring ideal piston motion up to frequencies above its crossover point well-damped. The cone is fitted with a low loss rubber surround that absorbs resonance modes that may build up in the cone. EVO4’s woofers blend perfectly with the dome midrange to produce a desirable lower-midrange response. Bass voices and lower register instruments have the weight, warmth, and articulation of a live performance, without the muddiness and loss of clarity of lesser designs. Simultaneously, EVO4’s bass is deep, impactful, and powerful yet tuneful, musical, and precise.Low frequencies are handled by Wharfedale's low-distortion motor system, coupled with woven kevlar cones to deliver powerful bass you can both hear and feel. The strong, lightweight Kevlar makes the driver both fast and powerful, delivering accurate bass that can be impressively low and loud when desired.

If you’re thinking that any speaker that stands 106cm tall and has twin 15cm bass drivers should deliver plenty in the way of bass, you’d be right. The EVO4 line of Wharfedale uses technology and design elements that have been developed for the company's flagship, the Elysian line. The 4.1s are equipped with an advanced folded ribbon tasting that produces silky high frequencies, and a 5 "woven Kevlar Woofer offers a solid bass display. The drivers are housed in a few curved bas reflex cabinets that are carefully designed with internal reinforcements to dampen the vibrations. Note worthy is that there is nowhere really a comparison between the 4.2 and 4.1, so I wonder where this niche group draws their conclusions from. Once there, the sound was OK and maybe fine but I just couldn't enjoy it. Maybe it needs more surgery with EQ. Maybe it is the directivity. Either way, I could get into it. Wharfedale engineers were smart enough to know that this speaker would most likely be used in smaller listening rooms or on book shelves. Thus they chose to let the bass reflex port fire downwards. Great idea which allows the speakers to be placed nearer to your front walls. Less bass problems, more musical enjoyment.

As for position, I have them on stands (spiked through carpet on concrete floor) just over a foot away from side walls and pretty much open from behind and slightly toed in towards listening position.
