Once the external drive is ready to go, you should be able to record with the touch of a single button or even set recordings right from the TV’s EPG (electronic program guide). Again, don't base your decision entirely on pricing and buy the most expensive thing. Determine what you need first and see what options meet your criteria. There's also the omnidirectional route if you're trying to capture the sound of a room. This can be particularly useful for location recordings—say, if your podcast calls for you to get the sound of a softball game in a park or the sound of glasses clinking and diners chatting at a restaurant. But this brings up another point—if your podcast is going to involve on-location recording, you should consider a mic that can record directly to mobile devices. Best of all, recording television is free. You are not tethered to subscriptions service, where you lose access to your favourite shows once the billing stops. Can you record on a smart TV? Some manufacturers recommend USB hard drives with external power supplies but our tests have shown that Verbatim 2.5” external HDDs that take power from the USB plug, function on 98% manufacturers’ TVs without any problems. In the exceptional case that the power from the USB port on the TV is not sufficient, an external HDD with power supply always works. Manufacturers typically allow 1:1 recording, meaning that you will see no loss in picture quality.
Some gaming mics up the ante by providing multiple polar patterns. Although cardioid (single-direction) is the standard, maybe you want to capture more than one voice with an omnidirectional or figure-eight pattern. Some gaming mics also have built-in switches to work with specific consoles. If you want to mix with a pure signal or learn how to process audio on your own, this mic is an excellent value (especially since it's often available for far less than its list price). Just keep in mind that you might need to buy a pop filter and a better stand for the best results. Fast forward to today: the government has closed down analogue TV broadcasting and replaced it with a form of digital TV based on DVB-T (standard definition) and DVB-T2 (high definition). The digital signal that probably arrives through the same TV aerial has to be decoded by a Freeview or Freeview HD tuner, and Freeview tuners have been included in all TV sets sold in the UK since 2008.
There's a wide price range among USB mics and we've done our best to test models across the entire spectrum. Spending more doesn't necessarily mean you get a better product, but there does seem to be a fairly sensible scale of quality that comes with price. USB ports come in a few different shapes and sizes. Sometimes this correlates with the maximum data transfer speeds of the device. Notably, in the case of USB A, this is not true. USB A If you own a smart TV, it's likely able to record, pause and rewind live digital terrestrial channels. However, as smart TVs do not typically ship with an internal HDD for such purposes, these features are unavailable until an external memory drive connects via a USB port. Then you're probably more suited to streaming-only entertainment, so you may want to consider the best streaming devicesinstead. They're easy to use, cheap and perfect for instant entertainment.
Once you have connected your external USB hard drive to the USB recording port of your TV you can move on to initializing the USB HDD with the TV. For the average TV user who is recording HD films and TV shows, you'll want at least 128GB. Stay mindful of what you've recorded and regularly delete older content though. We can't say exactly how many hours of TV will be stored as this all depends on the resolution it's being saved at. Sometimes your TV will let you choose whether to record at a high or medium resolution to save space. As always, with the different TV brands and models, your milage will vary. Then, ignoring any instructions in the manufacturer's guide to select " stereo mix", simply press the Record button on Transport Toolbar. We could talk in circles here, but a USB mic for music recording should probably have only minimal DSP, if any. Although some models employ DSP, it is really subtle in these scenarios compared with that of a typical gaming mic. And there are plenty of music mics that use no DSP whatsoever. You probably don't want a mic that uses obvious DSP in the signal. With music, the goal is typically to get the purest recording "to tape" (even if your "tape" is GarageBand). Then, any processing that needs to happen takes place during mixing. Some engineers record with a little EQ or compression as part of the signal chain, but that offers less flexibility down the road, as those effects are now baked into the recording. Of course, the compression or dynamic limiting is often in place to prevent distortion on peaks, so it's there in the name of preventing distortion from getting into the recording, which is the whole purpose of DSP to begin with. With all that out of the way, let's break down the discussion into the three most typical uses for a USB mic and the various options, characteristics, and needs for each application.The goal with any mic is almost always clarity. But for podcasts, we need to take the vocalist into account. If you are recording an experienced speaker who has excellent mic technique, you might want to go for a USB mic that has no DSP.
