While the kits do contain everything, they don’t tell you how to set it up so you can still enjoy the fun of creating a suitable enclosure, styling it exactly how you want to suit your home. What are the main types of reptile starter kits?

Given that the included heating and lighting equipment will be providing the optimum environment for your tortoises digestive system, our kit comes with a sand/soil based substrate blended to mimic the natural terrain a wild tortoise lives on. The Essentials kit also includes a sand scoop and reptile safe disinfectant for keeping the environment clean and smelling fresh. Essentials Kit contents: Dried tortoise pellets are not recommended as the digestive system of a tortoise is not well suited to this kind of food so please don't buy them. Bronze - The Bronze starter kits offer just the bare essentials for a novice reptile keeper, allowing them to keep their new reptile happy and healthy, with slightly more basic yet reliable equipment. These kits come with smaller enclosures and are designed for juvenile or hatchling reptiles. Sterilised topsoil is best for most species from arid environments which include the Mediterranean tortoises such as the Testudo Ibera and Graeca, Hermanni, Marginated and Horsfield tortoises. Our Tortoise starter kits can be split into kits made by Swell and those made by other brands. The kits made by other brands often only include items from that one brand and may not have everything your tortoise needs. Our range of tortoise starter kits are designed by reptile experts and will contain absolutely everything you need to get started. Our kits are further divided into 4 different tiers:

Nutrobalor Reptavite,a calcium and Vitamin D supplement, which is sprinkled over the food on a daily basis. This is essential for the tortoise, along with UVB light, to grow healthy shell and bone.

The TPG does not recommend mesh rabbit runs, unless the lower perimeter can be boarded out to prevent the tortoise seeing out and climbing up. The tortoise is an ectotherm: in other words it is cold blooded, and it relies on temperature to maintain optimum health and wellbeing andtherefore it needs to be able to thermoregulate (adjust its temperature). This means that it needs to be able tomove fromareas of higher or lower temperatures set within its normal thermal range in all parts of the vivarium. The confines of an enclosed vivarium usually result in a similar temperature in all parts of the vivarium, and so make thermoregulation virtually impossible to achieve, and invariably the tortoise will suffer if kept this way over a long period of time.
