About this deal

Regular Updates: Our recommendations stay current with any changes in product performance or availability. Independent: We will tell you exactly what we think of a product and we would never recommend anything we wouldn't use ourselves. This device could be very useful if you’re evaluating or monitoring the temperature of things. In the image above, you can see my aging company Macbook is getting quite hot in the top center under light use, probably indicating the need to blow out the fans to clear built up dust.

The main complaints that people have about the module-type thermal cameras include the annoying constant calibration (which is something that happens with the Topdon TC001), the reliance of the USB port, which may lead to the module either slipping out or breaking, and there have been complaints about loss of connection, which I found a bit strange, but possible. The TC001 is not going to fall out of the phone due to both the properly-made connector and the low weight of the module, while the loss of connection is unlikely when it’s done via the USB port. The familiar gun-shaped stylings make this a comfortable device to use for detecting temperature at a distance. It comes with a large 3.2” screen and boasts a class-leading 320 x 240 px resolution, as well as a measurement accuracy of 0.07°C. The temperature range of -20°C – 300 °C isn’t the most impressive, but it’s enough for most users. But with a temperature measurement accuracy of ± 2°C, it’s reliably accurate. The user interface of the TC001 app is simple and easy to use. You get four large tiles corresponding to the four sections of the app: We recently got our hands on the TOPDON TC001 Thermal Camera. It is a compact unit that attaches to the USB-C Port of any Android Phone or Windows System. With a resolution of 256 × 192 pixels and a frame rate of 25Hz, you can expect high-quality images and videos. It also comes with a companion app/software for Android and Windows. IP54 rated for protection against water and dust and 2m drop proof allows you to be more carefree while using the device. The companion app is very good and easy to use. You can measure the temperature of a point, along a line (highest and lowest), or in a plane (highest and lowest). The camera can measure up to 9 different readings at a time.

California-based technology experts Teledyne specialise in bleeding-edge imaging equipment used in everything from defence to space exploration. They use that same technology to make one of the best smartphone-compatible thermal imaging cameras available. The FLIR ONE Gen 3 is a fantastic device for chasing cold spots. It’s an affordable way to survey your own home for draughts using your iPhone. With an impressive range of electronic equipment from EV charging units to OBD diagnostic tools, TOPDON are a brand to keep an eye on. Their TC View TC001 thermal imaging camera is a high-performance tool that connects directly to a smartphone or tablet. It simply means you can see heat in high definition from a distance. TC001 is not compatible with all styles of phone cases or tablet cases, the included extension cable may need to be used. During our ongoing testing, we analyse the camera’s accuracy, usability, customisation (i.e. adjustable emissivity based on the material), additional functions as well as the applications provided to view data afterwards for further analysis.

Note: I need to mention that on the left, there’s the AGM Glory Pro, the TC001 being on the right. Since the left footage was slowed down by AGM, I had to cut some parts to make it match with the Topdon TC001. Also, the freezes that you see on the right side are not video cuts, it’s just the TC001 recalibrating. With adjustable focus, the lens can be set on subjects as far as 550m (1,800ft). That’s not only handy for outdoor pursuits but allows you to take full advantage of the relatively high resolution to get sharp thermal images at any distance. The resolution is fine at 256 x 192px, while the range works between -20°C – 350°C. What sets this camera apart is the excellent thermal sensitivity. If you’re doing delicate work, then the 0.1°C or <40mK is the best on my list. The temperature measurement accuracy of ± 2°C is up there with the best-performing devices too.
