About this deal

On 27 January 1907, in Beaumont, Texas, a church was dedicated and named in honor of Saint Anthony. The church was later designated a cathedral in 1966 with the formation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Beaumont, but was not formally consecrated. On 28 April 1974, St. Anthony Cathedral was dedicated and consecrated by Bishop Warren Boudreaux. In 2006, Pope Benedict XVI granted the cathedral the designation of minor basilica. St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica celebrated its 100th anniversary on 28 January 2007. [19] According to his request, Anthony was buried in the small church of Santa Maria Mater Domini (probably dating from the late 12th century) and near a convent that had been founded by him in 1229. Nevertheless, due to his increased notability, the construction of a large basilica began around 1232, although it was not completed until 1301. The smaller church was incorporated into the structure as the Cappella della Madonna Mora (Chapel of the Dark Madonna). The basilica is commonly known today as "Il Santo" (The Saint). The cornerstone was laid and blessed in August, 1888. The friars moved into the original house two months later and a little more than a year later, on Thanksgiving Day 1889, Archbishop Henry Elder of Cincinnati consecrated the chapel. The building’s north wing was to house the novices and the south housed the professed friars.

St. Anthony has been pictured by artists and sculptors in all kinds of ways. He is depicted with a book in his hands, with a lily or torch. He has been painted preaching to fish, holding a monstrance with the Blessed Sacrament in front of a mule or preaching in the public square or from a nut tree. When I was 13, I had a rosary ring from Monte Cassino Abbey in Italy. I loved that rosary ring; I loved how I could pray the rosary anywhere and have it be subtle, unnoticeable. I wore it all the time. Problem was, I had a bad habit of losing it. I would lose it for days and weeks at a time, to my great worry. My friend recommended I ask St Anthony to pray for me, and so that's just what I started doing. Whenever I lost the ring, I'd ask St Anthony to pray for me, and he'd always find it within a day or two. But one day, during my sophomore year of high school, I lost it at the school's dunk tank fundraiser. Sadly, I never found the ring. But, as my mom said, "St. Anthony had been finding your ring for too long - I think he's done looking for it!" I never found the ring, but I thank St. Anthony for interceding for me those hundreds of times. - Monique Lost joy After all, we had tasked him for generations with intentions great and small, and never once had he failed to intercede. I screamed, "Praise God!" and got on my knees right there in the closet, praying in thanksgiving to St. Anthony. My husband heard me cry out, and came into the room to find me moved to tears and exclaiming, as my mother had, “He has never failed us!” Anthony’s superior, St. Francis, was cautious about education such as his protégé possessed. He had seen too many theologians taking pride in their sophisticated knowledge. Still, if the friars had to hit the roads and preach to all sorts of people, they needed a firm grounding in Scripture and theology. So, when he heard the glowing report of Anthony’s debut at the ordinations, Francis wrote in 1224, “It pleases me that you should teach the friars sacred theology, provided that in such studies they do not destroy the spirit of holy prayer and devotedness, as contained in the Rule.”Anthony too demurred, but finally began to speak in a simple, artless way. The fire within him became evident. His knowledge was unmistakable, but his holiness was what really impressed everyone there. Chong, A., ed. (2016). Over time the child came to be shown considerably larger than the book and some images even do without the book entirely. He typically appears carrying the infant Jesus and holding a cross. [32]

You may ride the tram (and the city’s metro, buses, funiculars and trains) for free with the Lisboa Card. My maternal grandfather, uncle, cousin, and sister all share his name and patronage, and he has always been one of our most beloved family saints. In my Italian family, he was considered a miracle worker for intentions we placed before him, and on my mother’s side of the family, he has been invoked with unshakeable confidence for generations. Various legends also surround the death of Anthony. One holds that when he died, children cried in the streets and all the church bells rang of their own accord. Another legend is in regard to his tongue. He was buried in a chapel that became part of the basilica, where his tongue, jaw, and vocal cords were symbolically chosen as relics for veneration (as was a tradition in medieval times) to be displayed in a large reliquary. When his body was exhumed 30 years after his death, it was found turned to dust, but the tongue was claimed to have glistened and looked as if it were still part of a live body; a further claim being made that this was a sign of his gift of preaching. [ citation needed] On 1 January 1981, Pope John Paul II authorized a scientific team to study Anthony's remains and the tomb was opened five days later. [10] Saint and Doctor of the Church [ edit ] St Anthony of Padua and St Francis of Assisi by Friedrich Pacher Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua - Padua, Italy An expanded version of the above appears in, Saint Anthony of Padua: The Story of His Life and Popular Devotions, published by St. Anthony Messenger Press by Franciscan Father Leonard Foley (1913-1994) Miracles and Traditions of St AnthonyAnthony traveled tirelessly in both northern Italy and southern France—perhaps 400 trips—choosing to enter the cities where the heretics were strongest. Yet the sermons he has left behind rarely show him taking direct issue with the heretics. As the historian Clasen interprets it, Anthony preferred to present the grandeur of Christianity in positive ways. It was no good to prove people wrong: Anthony wanted to win them to the right, the healthiness of real sorrow and conversion, the wonder of reconciliation with a loving Father. Public Preacher, Franciscan Teacher The 1931 silent film Saint Anthony of Padua (Antonio di Padova, il santo dei miracoli) was directed by Giulio Antamoro. So, St. Anthony kept a special book of the Psalms with him at all times. In the 13th century, before the invention of printing, books were extremely valuable. They were especially important to a teacher like St. Anthony. Three years later, we sold our house, and were preparing to relocate. I was convinced that my rings were there but had not found them. Though I had prayed to St. Anthony for the return of the rings daily, I had never prayed a novena to him for this intention in the days before his feast. That year, I prayed a novena ending on the vigil of his feast, which happens to be my birthday. With great hope that he would restore my rings to me on the feast day, I offered my Mass every day that week in thanksgiving for his intercession in my family. I felt excited to see what our faithful family saint would do.
