About this deal

Place a scaffold plank (approx 9ft or longer) on top of the gazebo beams and spanning the gazebo close to the center. Cut the rest of the roof boards to the following lengths (the measurement being the longest point): Take 8 lengths of 2×4 sawn treated pine lumber approx 74″ long, from which the rafters will be cut.

Once the rafters are attached to the king post, secure them to the perimeter posts. Before you do that, put them into position and examine the structure so you know everything looks good.

Let’s create your perfect Octagonal Gazebo

They come in a variety of styles and materials, from wooden gazebos that blend seamlessly with natural surroundings to robust, to permanent metal gazebos that can withstand the elements. Many of the metal options also come with polycarbonate roofing and options for curtains and nets. Garden arbours The king post not only supports the weight of the roof, but it’s the central element that you attach the rafters to. If you already have the king post in place, good for you. Skip to the next step. The floor: There is no allowance for a structural floor in this plan-set as the gazebo is designed to use the existing (grassed) ground as a ‘floor’. If a structural floor of some description is preferred, then concrete, tiles, slate or lumber can easily be added later.

While the person on the scaffold plank balances the first two opposing rafters, the other can fix the birds-mouth (see drawing above) end of the rafters to the beam, central over the post. However, for these beam/post braces you will need 16 lengths of 100×100 sawn treated timber at approximately 400mm long. Strength and sturdiness – metal is strong and sturdy and will not distort or break in the years to come Pencil a square line at one end of the beam with your set square as on the diagram below and then pencil another line 22.5 degrees from the first. With the right materials and tools, you can build the roof of an octagonal gazebo in less than a day. Since it’s heavier than a square one, you’ll need to install a king post right in the middle of your structure—that’s crucial.

This gazebo has been designed with eight posts concreted into the ground rather than bolted to a concrete slab or lumber floor. This means that a floor is not necessary – grass will do quite nicely! However if a floor of some description is preferred, then concrete, tiles, slate or lumber can easily be added later without affecting the structure of the gazebo. Set the blade on your circular saw to a depth of 20mm and do repeated cuts along and between the two pencil lines. One person will need to be up on the scaffold plank with another to pass up the two opposing rafters nailed to the hub. If you go with slats, start from the top railing and work your way up to the part where the rafter meets the king post. Cut the slats to measure and attach them to the rafters using 2 ½” galvanized screws. If your level is not long enough to span from one post to the next, get a straight piece of lumber 40″ long, and use that with the level sitting on top.Wooden gazebos may require regular maintenance such as staining or sealing to protect the wood from weather elements and ensure its longevity. Is a pergola more suited than a gazebo to support plants? When planning to install a garden gazebo or other outdoor structure, there are several key factors to consider. Firstly, the choice of location is crucial. The structure should be placed in a part of your garden that is flat and stable, ideally with easy access to your house for convenience during socialising or dining events. Cut one piece to the dimensions of the diagram above and then use that piece as a template to mark and cut the other seven. Once all rafters are cut, you will need someone to give a hand to assemble them. A flat roof octagon has a 45-degree angle because it is divided by eight (the number of sides). Roof boards (the boards that run along the roof horizontally) have 135 angles at their ridge and 45 angles at their corners. A rafter can be cut with an angle calculated using simple geometry and trigonometry. To ensure that each tile or sheet is securely fastened, it is critical that roofing material is accurately measured and cut. If the material is to be used, the proper nails or screws must be used. An average rafter is 20 feet long, and its length is calculated by dividing the height of the roof by its width. Determine how long your rafters will be before cutting them and then figure out what angle your saw will cut them at.
