In the early years, your young children are not going to remember everything! But it’s about exposure to the chronological narrative and introduction to the big ideas and important players. MOH is set up to complete about 3 lessons per week for 36 weeks in Volume 1. The other volumes have slightly less lessons but they are longer. In spite of these organizing themes, the course covers many other topics regarding culture and religion. Selected historical figures are highlighted such as Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, Hudson Taylor, Helen Keller, Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Billy Graham, and Nelson Mandela. The Mystery of History is not only written by a Christian but it also written from a Christian worldview. As my kids and I read the lessons aloud, we are continually reminded of whose history we are reading about (God’s history!). I love that my children and I can learn about difficult and often terrifying events in history through the lens of redemptive history (how God is working to save his people). This curriculum does an excellent job of telling the story of history from a Christ-centered perspective. Chronological Mystery of History includes plenty of map work options, hands-on activities, timelines, quizzes, and other work to extend the learning for each lesson. All of this is optional. The main component is to read each lesson, only adding in the activities or work that you want to add. Some days all we did was read the lesson and add to our timeline. Other days we took more time to dig deeper. As the kids got older, they may have written a summary or done an oral narration of the lesson. Volume III covers the time period of the Reformation. Although Hobar does a better than average job of trying to present the Catholic side of issues, such as indulgences, the content is strongly Protestant. We believe that the first day of the week is the Lord’s Day, and should be kept as a priority for believers to assemble in worship. Recognizing the importance of the gathered assembly in the life of the professing Christian, we consider it a privilege to come together regularly in worship, not neglecting to meet together for mutual edification in Christ.Science: My high school students are taking Biology from the 101 Series, to coincide with the study of Creation. My younger students are using two different books from Berean Builders — Science in the Beginning and Science in the Ancient World.
