W orld history is far more than what man has or has not accomplished! From a biblical worldview, history tells us a bigger story, and one that is far grander than man can conceive. His-story is the slow, steady revelation of God to man, and mankind’s mixed response—some bow down to Him, some don’t. But the sovereign plans of the Lord remain the same, as Jesus Christ came ‘to seek and to save that which was lost.’ ” (Luke 19:10).” Here’s an inside peek into the Story of the World curriculum. Mystery of History & Story of the World Comparison

During his trial, Kidd wrote a letter claiming he pilfered around 100,000 British pounds and buried it somewhere, offering to trade the location for his life, according to Reuters. However, during the trial it was estimated that the takings from all his time aboard the Adventure Galley likely totaled closer to 400,000 pounds. To his dying breath, Kidd argued he was a legitimate privateer who had only ever plundered targets approved by the crown. But he was hung and his body covered with pitch and squeezed in an iron cage displayed over the Thames. We started using MOH when our oldest was in kindergarten and continued for about 10 years all together. In the early years, your young children are not going to remember everything! But it’s about exposure to the chronological narrative and introduction to the big ideas and important players. As they get older and encounter the history again at a more mature level, they will be able to understand the remember more. MOH is set up to complete about 3 lessons per week for 36 weeks in Volume 1. The other volumes have slightly less lessons but they are longer. This gives you flexibility to take your time, spread out the lessons, or dive into several activities or map work for each lesson. Is MOH secular or Christian? Introducing scientific concepts in the context of history, the days of creation are used as a structure through which a wide variety of scientific topics are introduced, including: light, energy conservation, air & water, botany, the solar system, zoology, and some aspects of human anatomy and physiology. Volume IV teaches modern history under four "war" themes: Wars of Independence, Wars of Ideologies, Wars of the World, and Wars of Modern Times and the Hope of Mankind. In spite of these organizing themes, the course covers many other topics regarding culture and religion. Selected historical figures are highlighted such as Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, Hudson Taylor, Helen Keller, Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Billy Graham, and Nelson Mandela. Summary These lessons are designed to be used by an instructor who has been through the Teaching Writing: Structure and Style seminar.

The Mystery of History is not only written by a Christian but it also written from a Christian worldview. As my kids and I read the lessons aloud, we are continually reminded of whose history we are reading about (God’s history!). I love that my children and I can learn about difficult and often terrifying events in history through the lens of redemptive history (how God is working to save his people). This curriculum does an excellent job of telling the story of history from a Christ-centered perspective. Chronological Mystery of History includes plenty of map work options, hands-on activities, timelines, quizzes, and other work to extend the learning for each lesson. All of this is optional. The main component is to read each lesson, only adding in the activities or work that you want to add. Some days all we did was read the lesson and add to our timeline. Other days we took more time to dig deeper. As the kids got older, they may have written a summary or done an oral narration of the lesson. Volume III covers the time period of the Reformation. Although Hobar does a better than average job of trying to present the Catholic side of issues, such as indulgences, the content is strongly Protestant. We believe that the first day of the week is the Lord’s Day, and should be kept as a priority for believers to assemble in worship. Recognizing the importance of the gathered assembly in the life of the professing Christian, we consider it a privilege to come together regularly in worship, not neglecting to meet together for mutual edification in Christ.Science: My high school students are taking Biology from the 101 Series, to coincide with the study of Creation. My younger students are using two different books from Berean Builders — Science in the Beginning and Science in the Ancient World. They have a handy chart for using both Mystery of History and Berean Builders together! Thursday: Review the three lessons and do Wall of Fame (timeline) and Somewhere in Time (Geography) We personally didn’t keep using MOH during the high school years. We’ve started using Notgrass curriculum for 9th-12th grade. MOH review
