About this deal

Leaf miners are so named because they eat or mine the stuff between the leaf’s top and bottom surfaces. They eat all the cells and plant matter in the middle layers. As they do so, they crawl along, leaving behind them a pale or even translucent trail of damage within theleaf. These leafminers are also commonly called snout beetles due to the odd shape of their head. Mature insects of this variety are among the most damaging to crops. Kill leaf miner larvae by squashing leaves if you notice signs of “mining” activity. Keep an eye on your plant leaves in early spring when leaf miners become active. If you see the tell-tale signs of snake-like patterns on leaves, squeeze the part of the leaf where the burrow ends.

Remember, leaf miner larva will drop off the leaf and pupate in the soil directly under the plant. If you had leaf miners there before, they may emerge as adults and would already be under your rowcovers. However, they can be a problem on vegetables grown for their edible leaves, like spinach, lettuce, or swiss chard. The damage is unsightly, and you probably don’t want to eat what the miners leftbehind. These destructive insects tend to mine onto the lower leaves of a plant because their tissues are composed of tannins and cellulose.Leaf miner is a broad term used to describe the larvae of Lepidoptera, Diptera and Hymenoptera that live inside of plant leaves while feeding and maturing. Each trap is supplied with three pheromone lures to last an entire Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner season. These are the same lures used for our standard sized Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner Traps. Simply remove the lure from the foil sachet and place it in the cage at the top of the trap.

Clear up any left-over pet food laying around the yard that attracts Mynas, and other vermin, notably rats and mice, before setting the trap. Bee zappers are large sheets of metal wiring and mesh with a light source encased within them. Hang zappers strategically around the perimeter of your yard to electrocute any bees and flying insects that come its way. Note that zappers do not discriminate so you may end up destroying beneficial creatures, too, like butterflies and moths. Making a Soda Bottle Trap to Eliminate Ground Bees Remove the smaller cage from inside the bigger cage by first undoing the clip on the top hinged lid. Don't lose the clip. It’s common to notice that you have ground bees in the early spring when they become active, and you’re doing yard work. You spot them hovering about close to the ground, and if you observe, you can see them entering the underground burrows. Ahmed, S.; Ahmad, N.; Khan, R.R. The tiny wasps lay roughly 50 eggs during their brief life. Every female egg laying predatory wasp is responsible for destroying about 350 leaf miner larvae. The egg parasitoid Trichogramma achaeae has been identified as a candidate for biological control of the South American Tomato Pinworm, Tuta absoluta. On greenhouse conditions a high efficacy, 91.74 % of damage reduction was obtained when releasing 30 adults/ plant (75 adults/ m2) every 3-4 days on August and September of 2008 in the southeast of Spain (Cabello et al., 2009). Various types of insects produce larvae that “mine” leaves. There are thousands of insect species considered to be leaf miners. Common types of leaf miners include spinach leaf miners ( Pegomya hyoscyami), vegetable leaf miners ( Liriomyza sativae), and citrus leaf miners ( Phyllocnistis citrella). Leaf Miner Life Cycle Getting rid of leaf miners and disrupting their lifecycle requires a multi-method approach. Because the burrowing pests live in leaves, sprays are not always effective for larvae. However, natural sprays can help kill pupae and adult leaf miners.
