About this deal

Central to this is the quality of our tutors. All hold at least one degree in their main subject, with the majority having also been employed in relevant leadership positions. Several have Masters or Doctoral degrees, and all possess Qualified Teacher Status achieved through certified postgraduate training and many years of excellent classroom practice. Obviously, in a coaching relationship, the options for what to focus on in terms of growth are identified and prioritised by the practitioner, but the elements from the observed learning presented by the observer still need to inform and enhance the depth of this conversation.

But I think often, before you've got to those next steps, you're starting to also ask questions of your manager. So I think sometimes, we do make assumptions that our experiences are the same as everybody else's, because we go, well this is my experience; everyone must be thinking and feeling the same thing as me. And I might have had that exact conversation that I just gave the example of there, so say I was saying that to Helen; and then Helen might say to me, "Oh, gosh, I didn't even realise I was doing that", so it was an unconscious behaviour and someone might just apologise and say, "I'll try harder not to do that in the future and let me know if I am". Someone might say, "Oh, sorry, when I was doing that, I thought I was supporting you".

What kind of life was she living before this, that such simple things make her grateful? he wondered. This gave him a bitter taste in his mouth, so he stood up and poured himself a large glass of beer. The letter had stated that the girl’s mother had run away with another man, abandoning her daughter and her father. Her father had been so distraught by this that he became an alcoholic and ended up dying of alcohol poisoning. After that, the girl had been passed from relative’s home to relative’s home. Pondering over all this, Bill realized that her life had been far from easy. Even so, he still thought it was out of the question for him to be the one to raise her. As he swigged his beer, he resolved to make a decision on what to do with the girl by the following week. Once you’ve done a retrospective, help guide your team to be sure to actually focus on those things. You probably won’t see too much in the way of results for this first time through the process.

My only issue with this year, is that I don’t see my coach as an expert — but rather — a colleague” An effective way to encourage children to reflect on their learning is through using reflective learning resources with prompts, such as our What Went Well Even Better If Worksheet.

More like our What Went Well Even Better If Worksheet:

As experienced teaching professionals with decades of school leadership experience, we understand the challenges and rewards of working in busy schools and we work hard to provide an excellent standard of service in everything we do. Whilst working at BAE Systems I was in awe of our client’s meeting process: Without fail, every meeting ended at 55 minutes past the hour. The final five minutes were dedicated to flip-charting 1) “what went well” and 2) what could be improved (“even better if…”), with contributions required from all team members at all levels. The girl watched as Bill brushed the dirt off his hands and took off his straw hat. She flinched when she saw his tan face, no longer obscured by the shadow from the wide brim of his hat. We're definitely not the experts in this area, but Bruce is; and he's put together all of his knowledge and insights into his Make Work Better newsletter, which this week is a ten-stage guide to planning returning to some sort of normality that I think we're all craving in some way, shape or form. He talks about things like experiments rather than decision-making; there are loads of stats, facts; there are loads of example from other organisations and what they're all doing. Instead of saying, “Well that was crap and there’s nothing you can do about it,” now you’ve got something that says, “Alright, I need to find a simpler story because this point is strong.” By pairing those things you’re always pairing the positive with a positive action and that is how to get better at getting better.
