Central to this is the quality of our tutors. All hold at least one degree in their main subject, with the majority having also been employed in relevant leadership positions. Several have Masters or Doctoral degrees, and all possess Qualified Teacher Status achieved through certified postgraduate training and many years of excellent classroom practice. Obviously, in a coaching relationship, the options for what to focus on in terms of growth are identified and prioritised by the practitioner, but the elements from the observed learning presented by the observer still need to inform and enhance the depth of this conversation.

But I think often, before you've got to those next steps, you're starting to also ask questions of your manager. So I think sometimes, we do make assumptions that our experiences are the same as everybody else's, because we go, well this is my experience; everyone must be thinking and feeling the same thing as me. And I might have had that exact conversation that I just gave the example of there, so say I was saying that to Helen; and then Helen might say to me, "Oh, gosh, I didn't even realise I was doing that", so it was an unconscious behaviour and someone might just apologise and say, "I'll try harder not to do that in the future and let me know if I am". Someone might say, "Oh, sorry, when I was doing that, I thought I was supporting you".

Once you’ve done a retrospective, help guide your team to be sure to actually focus on those things. You probably won’t see too much in the way of results for this first time through the process.

Instead of saying, “Well that was crap and there’s nothing you can do about it,” now you’ve got something that says, “Alright, I need to find a simpler story because this point is strong.” By pairing those things you’re always pairing the positive with a positive action and that is how to get better at getting better.
