About this deal

A related cage hydrocarbon was called Golcondane by the first people to synthesis it in 1993, Mehta and Reddy, in honour of the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Indian city of Hyderabad, whose ancient name was Golconda.

A close relative to tetramantane (a higher homologue of adamantane), its proper name is nonacyclo[11.7.1.1 12,18.0 3,16.0 4,13.0 5,10.0 6,14.0 7,11.0 15,20]docosane. Because its unusual ethano-bridge was a deviation from the standard hydrocarbon caged rearrangements, it came to be known as bastardane—the unwanted child. [3] [45] This molecule's always good for a laugh! It gets its 'commical' name since it's a constituent of the plant Commiphora pyracanthoides, one of the Myrrh trees. When reduced to the aldehyde, I presume the product would be named commic al?Thanks to Neil Edwards and Jan Linders for info on these molecules. Ref: E.A. Couladouros et al., Chem. Eur. J. 11, (2005) 406. Thanks to Andrew Walden for suggesting these molecules and to Florian Raab and Bo Ohlson for providing some of the information about them. This molecule is an enzyme which reacts with ATP to cleave luciferin, its substrate. This cleavage reaction causes the firey glow in fireflies and certain types of fish, hence its name. Theerasilp S, Kurihara Y (August 1988). "Complete purification and characterization of the taste-modifying protein, miraculin, from miracle fruit". J. Biol. Chem. 263 (23): 11536–11539. doi: 10.1016/S0021-9258(18)37991-2. PMID 3403544. The only (relatively) safe way to store this chemical is in a metal container which has already been treated with fluorine. This creates a fluoride barrier with which the chlorine trifluoride cannot react.

Mg,Fe 2+) 2(Mg,Fe 2+) 5Si 8O 22(OH) 2), a magnesium- iron silicate hydroxide, first identified in Cummington, Massachusetts. [3] Thanks to Shawn McClements, Amsterdam NY, USA, and his high school class for suggesting this molecule. This mineral is a pink (of course...) gemstone, named after the gemologist G.F. Kunz who described it in 1902. Kunzite is a fragile stone, which shows different shades of colour when viewed from different directions. Called an "evening" stone, it should not be exposed to direct sunlight which can fade its color in time. Its alternative name, Spodumene, sounds like an American shop that sells computer nerds ("Spod-U-Mean") Chemical nomenclature, replete as it is with compounds with very complex names, is a repository for some names that may be considered unusual. A browse through the Physical Constants of Organic Compounds in the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (a fundamental resource) will reveal not just the whimsical work of chemists, but the sometimes peculiar compound names that occur as the consequence of simple juxtaposition. Some names derive legitimately from their chemical makeup, from the geographic region where they may be found, the plant or animal species from which they are isolated or the name of the discoverer.
