About this deal

We talk easily about ‘the light of Christ’, yet truly God is at work in the darkness, and in the most difficult of times. It can feel challenging to follow God when the way ahead seems less clear. I have made several other breads for their quarterly Communion services, and most would be considered non-traditional. Different churches have different rules about what can be served at the Communion service. The only real restriction for Nadine’s church was that it shouldn’t be messy.

Madge made the communion bread for the church and she had agreed to teach me how to make it! I was very excited to spend the day with her. She treated this with great respect and thoughtfulness. She used olive oil because she felt that was most likely what was used in making unleaved bread. I thoroughly enjoyed spending the day with her and that was almost 40 years ago. I never saw her after this day but she lives on in my memory and I hope to walk in heaven with her one day. Aberdeen Washington The Eucharist, usually called the Divine Liturgy, fulfils the command of Jesus Christ at the Last Supper: "Do this in remembrance of me".The Holy Spirit is seen as present in and as the guide to the Church working through the whole body of the Church, as well as through priests and bishops. Are Orthodox Churches the same as Eastern Orthodox Churches? It is believed that God will guide first one, then another of the men in the assembly. The divisions between the East and Western Churches happened gradually over the centuries as the Roman Empire fragmented. The Peace follows naturally from the Prayers of Intercession and begins the Liturgy of the Sacrament. But this section may be transposed to be the opening greeting or may be used later in the service, as part of either the breaking of bread or the Dismissal. Introductions can be found in the Supplementary Texts. 17 The Taking The koliva is decorated with nuts and dried fruit. The decoration may vary depending on the type of religious need. It can also be customized to suit personal tastes. Silver candies and silver coated candies are often used in decoration.

The psalm or canticle follows the first reading; other hymns and songs may be used between the readings. Gospel Reading The president introduces a time of silent prayer and then says the Collect, the prayer of the day. Proclaiming the Word of the Lord Reading(s)The nominal head of the Eastern Orthodox Churches is the Patriarch of Constantinople. However, he is only first among equals and has no real authority over Churches other than his own. Today, many Orthodox Churches (with the exception of Jerusalem, Russia, Serbia, and Mount Athos) use the New, Gregorian Calendar for fixed feasts and holy days but the Julian calendar for Easter and movable feasts. In this way all the Orthodox celebrate Easter together. Sacramental bread, also called Communion bread, Communion wafer, Eucharistic bread, the Lamb or simply the host ( Latin: hostia, lit.'sacrificial victim'), is the bread used in the Christian ritual of the Eucharist. Along with sacramental wine, it is one of two elements of the Eucharist. The bread may be either leavened or unleavened, depending on tradition. The Supplementary Texts provide a number of Collects and other endings to conclude intercession. In some circumstances it may be appropriate for the president to say both the opening invitation and these concluding words. 16 The Peace The president introduces a period of silent prayer with the words ‘Let us pray’ or a more specific bidding. Deaneries of the Arches, Croydon and Shoreham, Court of the Royal Peculiar of the Dean and Chapter of WestminsterThe activity is usually led by our team of volunteers who help with hospitality, and guide visitors through the steps in bread-making. Banns of marriage and other notices may be published before the Gathering (if possible by a minister other than the president), before the Prayers of Intercession or before the Dismissal. 10 The Prayers of Penitence
