Sanguinius and the Blood Angels, fresh from the Battle of Signus Prime, were among the last to arrive. As others have said: it feels like 'half of a book', and not just because of where things are at the end of the novel. There are a number of elements that could have had a good story built around them. The aging Euten the chamberlain, giving her advice to a Primarch and the Adeptus Astartes as though she is their equal. The concept of Perpetuals. The dialogue between the Lion and Guilliman. Pollux finding his purpose.Guilliman would have taken any loyal Primarch left, even the barbaric Leman Russ, to serve as the acting ruler of the Imperium Secundus rather than himself. It was a burden Guilliman had no desire to take up, but ultimately he was left with no one else as a potential candidate, and it proved a burden he was finally willing to shoulder. Although Guilliman had brought peace to Ultramar before founding this new empire, war soon followed. Alpha Legion infiltrators attempted to assassinate Guilliman in his private chambers, the traitor primarch Konrad Curze arrived in pursuit of Vulkan. He was stopped, but at the cost of the Salamanders primarch’s life. Meanwhile, elements of Curze’s Night Lords had also made their way to Imperium Secundus, having chosen the sparsely populated world of Sotha as a staging ground to recover after a disastrous defeat at the hands of the Dark Angels. But Sotha was much more than it seemed… This was not about empire-building, or seeking to claim the throne for himself as Horus had done. The Avenging Son already had a stellar empire in his possession -- Ultramar -- the Five Hundred Worlds. Guilliman wanted his brother to know that his only intention was to ensure the survival of their father's dream. Terra might have fallen, and their father might already be dead.

I had this gut feeling that it was either going to be the best 40k novel or just fall completely flat due to the overambitious nature of the endeavor. From my point of view, it is the latter and is such a disappointment.

Respect has to be given to those that have aided Dan in paving the way up to this novel and also kept him straight with maintaining continuity, but Dan has to take a bow as well. What he has done is produced not just a great book but also opened the door for the next stage of the Horus Heresy series. John Grammaticus shows up yet again, with a comrade in arms, which makes a nice to change to meet another perpetual cabal agaent.
