Description

This week, we reviewed a videoby Adunni of Sew Unique by Adunni on how to use draping tape. In it, she gives an introduction to draping for new fashion entrepreneurs. She also gives a practical example of how to drape a basic bodice. The video aims to introduce new fashion entrepreneurs to the concept of draping to make it easier for them to sew trending styles for their clients as they grow. Mind the specifics. Focus on the specifics as you progress through the design process. Don’t ignore the armhole because you’re too focused on the cowl. Before you begin draping, take all the necessary measurements and cuts, and as you work your way through the dress, focus on each individual component. Finally, consider the entire design as a whole. Additionally, you can use the Image Notes feature to highlight one or more interesting areas in your image. Everyone will see your notes when they roll over your image. Sari is a draped garment of South Asia, typically wrapped around the waist, with one end draped over the shoulder, partly baring the midriff. You could also use itfor other projects that require a lot of gathering, such as bed or crib skirts.

Each of the above mentioned steps or techniques are designed to help in making the process of draping easier and develop the draping skills. Alternate draping with flat pattern-making. Although draping and flat pattern-making are diametrically opposed in many ways, you can use both techniques simultaneously. Draping is helpful when you need to take a more practical approach to determine those measurements; flat fabric or paper pattern-making works a little better when you know your measurements in advance. Reference your total apex to side seam measurement from step 2 and make a horizontal line to represent your side seam The first step is to have perfect and accurate measurements of the garment or dress form. Next, part is to mark the center line of the dress by using a tape. This will help to keep the draping even across the dress. Figure 4: Measuring tape Once you pull the cords to your desired width, the cord is knotted at both ends, and the width is secured. This is very handy if the window or other opening is an unusual size and/or if you rarely want to open or close the covering. You can use a single panel, gather it to the exact width, hang the panel, and it will stay as-is.

A lot of companies in the fashion industry don’t use draping while designing their products anymore, but it remains a key element of high fashion. This is a must-know technique if you sew clothing or focus on pattern-making. However, first, you need to learn the ins and outs of draping and what you need to do in your own sewing room. Overall, the information provided in this video proves useful for new fashion entrepreneurs looking to be introduced to the how-to of draping. By following the steps outlined above, you can easily change your dress form from plain to marked with draping lines. Related Topics If the clothing design is symmetrical, as many are, you may only have to drape one side of the garment, saving valuable time! The only thing to keep in mind is that most Rod Loop Tape is nearly 4” wide and most Clip Ring Tape is about 3¼” to 3¾” wide. In either of these cases, you’d want a top hem that is at least 4” deep.

Tip 6: Also, when analyzing the drape remember in removing the pins from the form that you should also pin all of the draped seams together to get an accurate picture of what the final garment will look like when sewn. At this point, side-seams and princess seams can be pinned together from a 360-degree vantage point on the form to demonstrate how the newly constructed garment will hang. This is one of the main advantages of draping as a method of garment construction and provides lots of visual stimulation to the creative designer. For something a little more classic, you can choose to work with a charmeuse, or this china silk you see below. They’ll both look incredibly fluid and flawless on a dress form. Peplos, long draped garment worn by women of Ancient Greece, often open on one side, with a deep fold at the top, and fastened on both shoulders. Scissors and Shears: Shears are usually four-to eight inches long and made of steel Bent-handled shears are excellent for easy and straight cutting. The Shirring Tape is usually just over 1” wide, so it can be used with both wider and narrower hems.Once it is finished with draping and pinning, the next step is to baste the fabric. In this step, either sew the fabric to the foundation piece or sew the fabric itself to complete the draping process.
