About this deal

In the book’s foreword Salgado writes: “For me, it is the last frontier, a mysterious universe of its own, where the immense power of nature can be felt as nowhere else on earth. Here is a forest stretching to infinity that contains one-tenth of all living plant and animal species, the world’s largest single natural laboratory.”

Instituto Terra was founded by the Salgados in 1998 on degraded land previously farmed by the family. Over twenty years, they have slowly regrown part of the Atlantic Forest. Visitors will see photographs documenting the reforesting they have achieved and hear from staff at the Instituto about their work. T he Instituto now provides a home for endangered species, raises millions of tree seedlings in its nursery every year, and trains young ecologists to help protect the region’s biodiversity for generations to come. Anavilhanas – Islands in the Stream, the archipelago between 350 and 450 islands of every ilmaginable shape emerging from the dark waters of the Rio Negro. Photographs Dedicated to Indigenous Populations All the biodiversity has returned, even the jaguars, which were thought to be extinct in our region,” enthuses the photographer. The Institute, which is part of the UNESCO Mata Atlântica biosphere reserve, also has an educational vocation, raising awareness about the environment. These are all objectives of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere ( MAB) programme – which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021, and with which Salgado is actively involved. Although the tribes do some farming, they largely rely on hunting, fishing and gathering fruit, just like their hunter-gatherer forebears. Some of Salgado’s most startling shots show proud hunters carrying dead monkeys home to eat. Yet, he points out, they live in rhythm with nature. When a village gets too big for its ecosystem, it voluntarily splits and part of the community moves to fresh forest. Salgado admires, even envies, the balance their lifestyle allows. “There’s fish in the rivers, animals in the forest, fruit in the trees. They live so well. They have so much time to discuss, to sing, to have parties.”

Mountains– Brazil also boasts mountain ranges, which feature peaks shrouded in mist and rainforest-covered lower slopes. This talk took place earlier this year as part of Photo London’s Book Club live events, to coincide with the UK launch of Salgado’s ‘Amazônia’ book published by TASCHEN. With over 200 images, captured over 7 years spent travelling in the region, visitors will get to explore one of the most unique environments on the planet through Salgado’s eyes; Il secondo gruppo di immagini è dedicato alle diverse popolazioni indigene immortalate da Salgado con le fotografie raccolte in spazi che ricordano le “ocas”, tipiche abitazioni indigene, evocando in modo vivido i piccoli e isolati insediamenti umani nel cuore della giungla.

For Genesis I went to see what was pristine on the planet,” said Salgado. “I had previously photographed just one animal, humans, and now I went to photograph all kinds of animals. Through this work I was transformed into an environmentalist.”
