About this deal

The first of Peter May's China critically acclaimed thrillers featuring Beijing detective Li Yan and American pathologist Margaret Campbell. The penultimate chapter in the Enzo Files, sees Enzo enter the volatile and - now, it appears - violent world of haute cuisine. In 1989 the body of twenty year old Lucie Martin was dumped into a lake in Western France. Fourteen years later, because of a drought, her remains were discovered - a skeleton with a bag over her head. And this is where the tale got taken out of my hands. I had written five of the books when my then US publisher attempted to sell the series, and all my other books, to a nascent UK publishing house without my permission (as required by contract). We got into a legal wrangle, the biggest casualty of which was the Enzo series itself – and all his readers, who were denied the sixth and ultimate book which was to have resolved the final two murders.

Retrieved 27 December 2016. Enzo MacLeod, who is involved in a string of cold case investigations, arrives to look into this murder. It was never solved, but the killing appeared to be the same modus operandi as three others committed by a pimp and drug dealer, Régis Blanc, who was imprisoned for those murders. He seemed to be the killer, although he denied any involvement, and the case was assumed to be complete even though no evidence could be found to incriminate Blanc directly - he had an alibi. No one was ever convicted of her murder. But now, forensic expert Enzo Macleod is reviewing this stone-cold case - the toughest of those he has been challenged to solve.

Actual detection and forensic science play only a small part in the narrative which is more about the life and loves of Enzo: a surprising number of the females had had a relationship with him. There’s too much unnecessary description of what even minor characters look like and what they are wearing; and every female character gets an attractiveness assessment. I really enjoyed this book. I place it in the 'couldn't put it down' category, and 'more please' Mr May. When a mass grave containing eighteen mutilated female corpses is discovered in Shanghai, detective Li Yan is sent from Beijing to establish if the bodies are linked to an unsolved murder in the capital. Here, Li will be working with Mei Ling, deputy head of Shanghai's serious crime squad. That being so his Enzo MacLeod crime thrillers are all based in France where May and his wife have largely based themselves for the last few years. Cast Iron is the seventh book in the Enzo series, following on from Coffin Road. Enzo talks to Lucie’s boyfriend, the ex-cop whom the families of the Bordeaux Six hired to investigate, Blanc’s wife and the women he pimped. He locates Lucie’s missing skull and makes a discovery that changes the whole complexion of the case. The more he hears, the less he is convinced that Blanc is Lucie’s killer. The loose strings of Enzo's personal and professional life are neatly tied together at the story's end, and his compelling character, with all of his strengths and weaknesses, will be missed. Bonne chance, Enzo. Recommended for tartan noir fans, including the works of Christopher Brookmyre and Stuart MacBride, not to mention Enzo's personal favorite, Val McDermid." - Booklist In the third of the critically acclaimed China thrillers, Li Yan and Margaret Campbell travel to Shanghai: where a new ally, and a new enemy, await.Fourteen years later a summer heatwave parches the earth, killing trees and bushes and drying out streams. In 1989 a killer dumps the body of Lucie Martin into a lake in a picturesque area of western France, fourteen years later that body is revealed and in 2012 the case remains unsolved.
