Description

Maharaja Ranjit Singh was a Sikh ruler of the sovereign country of Punjab and the Sikh Empire. His Samadhi is located in Lahore, Pakistan. The South Waziristan Militia, then: The South Waziristan Scouts. HQ: (Militia): Wana, then (Scouts): Jandola. Robert E. L. Masters, Eduard Lea (1963). Perverse crimes in history: evolving concepts of sadism, lust-murder, and necrophilia from ancient to modern times. Julian Press. p.211 . Retrieved 5 April 2011. North West Frontier (also known as Flame Over India in the United States and Empress of India in Australia) is a 1959 British adventure film directed by J. Lee Thompson and starring Kenneth More, Lauren Bacall, and Herbert Lom. Early the next morning, Captain Scott quietly loads the passengers onto the old train. They include Mrs. Wyatt, Prince Kishan, arms dealer Mr. Peters, British expatriate Mr. Bridie, Lady Windham (the governor's wife), two British Indian Army NCOs, and Dutch journalist Mr. Peter van Leyden ( Herbert Lom). Victoria quietly freewheels down a gradient and out of the yard, but when her whistle is accidentally sounded, Gupta fires the engine and crashes her through the outer gate. The enemy fire on them and chase them but cannot keep up with the train.

I include some pictures of the film, which are necessary to illustrate my research. These are taken with my camera pointed at my computer screen, which is showing a, differently titled, version of NWF which is free to view on You Tube. I assume, therefore, that I am not transgressing. Yes, Edwardian, the German-built and equipped Ottoman railways would be a great subject, as too would be the light military railways laid by the British in the Eastern Theatre in WW1. NORTH WEST FRONTIER is the quintessential British adventure story. Its high production values puts it that bit above others of the genre. It's hard to go wrong when you have a well told story well directed beautifully photographed and well played out by a good cast.

Customer reviews

The movie is beautifully filmed, with great vistas of wilderness and excellent colour. Train-spotters will enjoy the railway details. Donald Sydney Richards (1990). The savage frontier: a history of the Anglo-Afghan wars. Macmillan. p.182. ISBN 0333525574 . Retrieved 5 April 2011. The brigades Frontier designation was discontinued in 1847, and the four regiments became Sikh Local Infantry. Moreover, Van Leyden has a revealing contretemps with Captain Scott, after they come across an ambushed train to find that ‘the rebels’ have slaughtered hundreds:

Mad Carew, thank you for more entertaining and educational posts. I realise that you are ploughing something of a lone furrow, but please keep up the good work! The Frontier Corps were not founded expressly on a tribal basis, but the older corps drew their recruits from the local tribal area: In many ways the Te-rain is the star of the 1959 film, North West Frontier. As Paul/Dzine pointed out in his article, the train starts out in India, running on metre gauge, and continues on a broader gauge in Spain, matters not hitherto noticed by Yours Truly. The five remaining regiments of Punjab Infantry were consecutively renumbered in the same sequence to become:- The brigade was formed by Lt. Col. Henry Montgomery Lawrence from four regiments of infantry raised in 1846 from veterans of the Sikh forces disbanded after the First Anglo-Sikh War:-Given Mrs Wyatt’s estimable qualities (not to mention Lauren Bacall’s great beauty), it feels very much like geopolitical wish-fulfilment when the film contrives a romance between her and the stalwart Captain Scott. It does not strike the viewer as an alliance of equals; though Kenneth More is a fine actor, in reviewing the film the Observer felt moved to point out (October 11th, 1959) that “he isn’t particularly handsome, brilliant or romantic…”. Despite these limitations, and her teasing about his earnest colonial endeavours, we see them grow closer as the film progresses; at the end, when the young prince has been safely delivered to Kalapur, Scott and Mrs Wyatt walk off together, arm in arm (rather oddly, to the strains of an instrumental version of the Eton Boating Song). In thus uniting Briton and American in an unequal but apparently genuine romance, this feels awkwardly like a plea to the United States not to forget its distant cousin. The Te-Rain – Part 2, “Now Victoria’s a wonderful old engine…” Or, ‘How do you solve a problem like Victoria?’ As someone else said - they certainly don't make them like this any more! A strong script brought to life by some of the best character actors of the period. Full of excitement with strong moments of pathos and uncringeworthy moments of sentiment.

During peacetime the Force was under the direct control of the Lt.- Governor of the Punjab, [97] but in war it came under the Commander-in-Chief, India. [71] Filming of the rail sequences started in the province of Granada, Spain on 10 May 1959 and took five weeks to complete. [14] The area's dry arid steppe was used to portray British India. Parts of the railway, which is now abandoned, traversed the northern part of the Sierra Nevada between Guadix and Baza. [15] The bomb-damaged rail bridge that the train must cross is the Anchurón bridge over the Solanas de la Carreta near the hamlet of Belerda in Granada (at 37°23′22.82″N 3°11′44.44″W / 37.3896722°N 3.1956778°W / 37.3896722; -3.1956778 ( Location of the damaged bridge in the film Northwest Frontier)). The ending used Iznalloz railway station near Barrio Primero De Mayo (at 37°23′45.27″N 3°31′39.75″W / 37.3959083°N 3.5277083°W / 37.3959083; -3.5277083). Kenneth More as the hero of the piece is not the Ringo Kid however. John Wayne was on his own mission when he became part of the Stagecoach ensemble, More is a British officer with a mission.Meanwhile, the garrison at Thal, which guarded the Kurram Pass, was soon cut off and besieged by a large Afghan force under the command of General Nadir Khan. The garrison, consisting of four under-strength battalions of Sikhs and Gurkhas and a squadron of cavalry, held out for a week until relieved by a column from Peshawar under Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer.

All that you expect from an adventure yarn is present in this absorbing film, often filmed on location in the splendid landscapes of India.A top-notch cast ,with extremely great actors who survive their sometimes cardboard characters and make them endearing:K.Moore, the military man with a good dose of humanity ,L.Bacall, the widow of a physician who tries to carry on her late husband's task in her way,W.H.White ,more British than ever,Herbert Lom,the baddie you love to hate,Ursula Jeans, the chic lady who displays courage and compassion.Plus IS Johar,as Gupta, whom the children will adore. The long-term plan for control of the district entailed building metalled roads along the lines of communication to a new central base to be established at Razmak. In 1921 work began on the southern road up the Tank Zam from Jandola, under the protection of the Waziristan Force. The following year work on the northern road from the Tochi began at Idak, shielded by the Razmak Force advancing to its objective. The two roads met in 1924, linking North and South Waziristan, and enabling the Indian Army to reorganise both areas as one military district. [27] The Waziristan and Razmak Field Forces then devolved into brigades based permanently at Manzai, Razmak, Gardai, and Bannu. [28] Percussive Maintenance: Used by Gupta on Victoria. Scott attempts it, but gets a facefull of oil for his trouble. North West Frontier is a must for all fans of this type of movie and will also appeal to railway enthusiasts too (like myself). Fantastic.During the Second Sikh War both the 1st and 2nd Irregular Horse earned further distinction with 'M OOLTAN', 'G OOJERAT', and 'P UNJAUB'. [64]
