Description

For those who have a Mac mini or Mac Pro, Luna Display has a "headless" mode that allows another Mac or ‌iPad‌ to be used as the main display for one of these display-less machines. It's also worth noting that ‌Sidecar‌ is limited to newer devices, while Luna Display is compatible with older iPads and Macs that don't support the ‌Sidecar‌ feature. Luna Display also offers full native resolution, which is not available with the Mac to Mac AirPlay feature that Apple added in macOS Monterey, plus it connects over Ethernet or Thunderbolt in addition to WiFi for faster speeds. The iMore team of Apple enthusiasts and experts shows you how to get the most out of your tech life by using Apple products and the apps, services, and devices they connect with to their fullest. iMore is a mainstay in the Apple community for good reason. While this product is nothing new, Apple eventually launched a competing product which gave them some trouble. Earlier this year, Luna added Thunderbolt and Ethernet support to the Target Display Mode for Mac, and now they’re taking things a step further by expanding to another platform. On a 10.5-inch iPad Pro, that means the option of having 1112x834 HiDPI (2x) resolution, or using the iPad's full pixel grid to run a 2224x1668 monitor. The latter option can be a little small for people with poor eyesight, but it's an amazing alternative to have while on the road, especially if you need more space than a laptop screen can provide. I've used wireless software that has much worse glitching, blinking, and lagging. Luna Display is definitely better. The Luna Display apps are designed to support both PCs and Macs, and the recent update also made the software faster on Apple's M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max machines. Macs and PCs have the same features when used with Luna Display, such as Teleprompter mode for an ‌iPad‌ connected to a main machine. Astropad is also working on 5K display support, a feature that is coming by the end of 2021. To be accurate, the Luna Display update to version 5.0 adds support for Windows PCs. So if you already have a Luna, wait for the update, and you’re all set.Apple has designed a Sidecar function for using an ‌iPad‌ as a secondary device for a Mac, but it's much more limited than what Luna Display can do because it only works with a Mac and an ‌iPad‌. Luna Display supports Mac-to-Mac, PC-to-Mac, and PC-to-iPad connectivity in addition to Mac-to-iPad functionality. But, even when I connect my MacBook Pro to my iPad Pro using Luna Display and a wired USB connection, I get the same blur effect. It's not the fault of the wireless connection. This does not happen when I use a wired connection with Duet Display, either. Please note: Your information is not shared or stored by Astropad and Luna Display does not record or save the contents of your screen.** For this week's giveaway, we've teamed up with Astropad to offer MacRumors readers a chance to win a Luna Display adapter that can turn an extra Mac or iPad into a secondary display for a primary Mac or even a Windows PC.

Here's the game-changer for me. Duet Display, despite its technical achievements, always felt clunky because you had to plug your iPad into your Mac to make it work. Working at a café, I often felt one step away from the folks who brought in iMacs with external keyboards and mice —when your electronics and wires are taking up more of the table than your food or beverages, you've basically created a mini-office for yourself. Luna Display from Astropad is a neat product that turns your iPad into a wireless second display monitor. And while it was initially only available for the Mac, this week, the company announced full support for Windows machines, making it more useful than ever. Yes, this little gadget will turn your iPad into a wireless second monitor for a Windows PC. While the Luna app doesn't have all of Astropad's many touch features built in, it still offers a fair amount of multitouch support for interacting with macOS: You can tap to select or tap and drag to resize windows; two-finger drag to scroll through windows; and two-finger pinch or spread to zoom.

Of course, the best thing about the Luna Display is that it's wireless. I can set my iPad on a completely different desk or table and still use it as a second screen. Moving apps and programs across my Mac to my iPad works seamlessly. I can take my iPad into a different room and continue to work with Mac programs on my iPad. As long as they're both connected to the same wi-fi, I can use the second screen feature.
