Mouth ulcers are painful sores in the lining of the mouth, which affect some people and are often worse in stressful times. Mouth ulcers are common and should clear up on their own within a week or 2. They're rarely a sign of anything serious, but may be uncomfortable to live with. The ulcer, which is usually circular with a yellow or white centre and a raised red rim, is an area where the surface of the mouth's lining has been removed. This means that nerve cells are exposed, causing pain and discomfort, particularly when eating certain foods. They occur singly or in clusters, and normally heal within 7 to 10 days. What causes mouth ulcers? While mouth ulcers are very common and normally clear up on their own, they can be uncomfortable and irritating. They're small sores (or lesions) that can appear anywhere in the mouth and may take a week or two to heal. Some people confuse canker sores with cold sores (fever blisters), but they’re very different. A canker sore appears inside your mouth. A cold sore forms outside your mouth, usually on your lips. Canker sores aren’t contagious, but cold sores are. How do you know if your mouth ulcer is bad?

Certain tablets which are left to dissolve in the mouth, when they are supposed to be swallowed whole. For example, aspirin can do this if kept to dissolve against a gum. Alendronate, taken to treat 'thinning' of the bones (osteoporosis), can also cause mouth ulcers if it is not taken according to the instructions. Erythroplakia. Erythroplakia is another symptom of smoking or chewing tobacco. People with erythroplakia have red patches that commonly appear behind their lower front teeth or under their tongue. Unlike leukoplakia lesions, erythroplakia patches are usually precancerous or cancerous. Anytime you have a mouth sore that lasts longer than three weeks, schedule a visit with your provider. Mouth ulcers that don’t go away could point to other underlying health conditions. Are mouth ulcers a sign of cancer? Iglu Pastilles dissolve slowly in your mouth. This releases active ingredients that have antiseptic properties to help fight infection. At the same time, you get a cooling sensation that helps soothe your mouth and gums. Plus, they’re sugar free, so are kind to your teeth, and they taste great too. Re-apply the gel, following steps 1 to 3 above, as necessary for each ulcer. The aim is to keep the ulcer area(s) protected with a coating of gel. As a guide, each application should normally last for an hour or more, although, on occasions, eating or drinking may make it necessary to re-apply the gel. In some cases, Iglu may remain in place for several hours, as it has strong adhesive properties.

Usually not, but it’s possible. A mouth ulcer that doesn’t go away could be a sign of oral cancer. In most cases of mouth cancer, mouth ulcers appear on or under the tongue. Some medications can cause mouth ulcers. Medication can cause mouth ulcers in various ways and may not necessarily cause the aphthous type of ulcer. Oral lichen planus. This condition can cause itchy rashes and lacelike, white sores inside your mouth. Oral lichen planus is an immune system response and most commonly affects women and people assigned female at birth (AFAB) age 50 or older. Iglu Sugar Free Pastilles contain the active ingredients benzalkonium chloride solution and compound benzoin tincture which have antiseptic properties. If you do not have a regular dentist you need to call the appropriate dental helpline number for your Local Health Board area. Mouth ulcers are more common in people with certain conditions - for example, Crohn's disease, coeliac disease, HIV infection and Behçet's disease. However, these ulcers are not the aphthous type. Symptoms in addition to mouth ulcers Canker sores (aphthous ulcers). These are the most common type of mouth ulcers. Healthcare providers aren’t exactly sure what causes them or why some people get them more than others do. Causes include minor trauma (like biting your cheek), acidic foods and even stress. Canker sores are usually white or yellow with red around the edges.Iglu Sugar Free Pastilles contain a small amount of a sugar substitute called sorbitol. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to ingredients of this sort, discuss this with your doctor before taking this medicine. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS If you have a mouth ulcer that lasts longer than three weeks, call your dental practice for advice. Do not use Iglu Gel if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to lidocaine hydrochloride monohydrate, aminoacridine hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of Iglu Gel listed in Section 6.

Do not take Iglu Sugar Free Pastilles if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to benzalkonium chloride solution, compound benzoin tincture or any of the other ingredients in this medicine. Avoiding things that irritate your mouth ulcer should help to reduce the discomfort while waiting for the ulcer to heal. Try the following: If in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. Driving and using machinery Oral thrush. An overgrowth of yeast called Candida albicans causes this fungal infection inside your mouth. It commonly happens after antibiotic treatment or when your immune system isn’t as strong as it usually is. Oral thrush causes red and creamy white mouth sores and patches.Minor aphthous mouth ulcers are the most common (8 in 10 cases). They are small, round, or oval and are less than 10 mm across. They look pale yellow but the area around them may look swollen and red. Only one ulcer may develop but up to five may appear at the same time. Each ulcer lasts 7-10 days and then goes without leaving a scar. They are not usually very painful. In rare cases, mouth ulcers that don’t heal can be a sign of mouth cancer. You should call your dental practice or GP if an ulcer has been present for three weeks or more. They will carry out remote consultation over the phone/video before seeing you in person in the practice if required.
