About this deal

We tested both of these out on a weekend seaside break during the UK heatwave and can confirm that, even though it feels as if you're wearing nothing on your skin, this SPF spray really will protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays and pollution damage for hours on end. Just make sure you're applying liberally and reapplying every couple of hours (or more frequently if you're swimming or sweating heavily).

It goes without saying that you need protection from both UVA and UVB in your sun protection, and, thankfully, almost all of today’s sun creams offer this. How do you know? Look for the words ‘broad spectrum’ on the bottle. The British Skin Foundation reserves the right at all times to disclose any information as necessary to satisfy any applicable law, regulation, legal process or governmental request, or to edit, refuse to post or to remove any information or materials, in whole or in part, in The British Skin Foundation's sole discretion. It protects you against both UVA and UVB rays but has larger molecules than regular SPFs so doesn't seep through to the deeper layers of your skin. The benefit of this? You're far less likely to have a sensitised response or breakout as a result of using this sun cream on your face. If you're looking for a sun cream for oily skin, SuperGoop's Unseen Sunscreen will become your best friend. With SPF 30, it's an invisible, lightweight formula that won't clog the skin and will keep it protected all day long. Formulated with skincare in mind, not only does it give you full protection against UVA and UVB rays, it delivers major benefits to the skin. We tested it twice, and on both occasions the SPF provided was well below 30. Because of this we’ve given it our Don’t Buy warning.Physical/mineral products reflect visible light as well as UV, which can make the formulations opaque and leave a white residue on the skin. Some formulations use nanoparticles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide – the minerals responsible for the residue. Nanoparticles are smaller, and as they scatter visible light – rather than reflect it – the sun creams are transparent. How to use sun cream However, there's no agreed definition of 'reef-safe', research is still ongoing as to the impact of these chemicals, and our tests found many mineral suncreams failed to protect as claimed – so take any claims with a pinch of salt. The letters "UVA" inside a circle is a European marking. This means the UVA protection is at least a third of the SPF value and meets EU recommendations. This includes applying it straight after you have been in water, even if it's "water resistant", and after towel drying, sweating or when it may have rubbed off. We used this on super oily skin and were relieved to see that this SPF is non-comedogenic and oil-free. Oily skin or not, it's important for everyone to stay hydrated and protected against the sun's harmful rays, and it can be hard to find a product that does both of these things without leaving a greasy film. However, this product does.Take extra care to protect babies and children. Their skin is much more sensitive than adult skin, and damage caused by repeated exposure to sunlight could lead to skin cancer developing in later life.

In 2017 there were approximately 14,000 new cases of melanoma and 147,000 cases of non-melanoma skin cancers. Melanoma and certain non–melanoma skin cancer can be fatal. The cases of melanoma have dramatically increased over the years. The sun emits ultraviolet radiation in the form of UVA and UVB (also UVC which does not reach the earth surface). Years of research has confirmed that both these rays can cause melanoma and non- melanoma skin cancers. Sunscreen successfully prevents most of these rays from reaching our skin and thus reducing our risk of skin cancer. In addition to the core safety tests, we also assess how easy and pleasant each sun cream is to apply. A product is only good if you'll use it, so our Best Buys are the ones that get the highest scores for these measures, on top of passing SPF and UVA tests.

Bioré UV Aqua Water Essence Sunscreen SPF50

Broad Spectrum: This means that there is protection against both UVA and UVB. Therefore this should be part of any sunscreen you apply. How much sunscreen should I apply? The sun emits two types of ultraviolet rays that are damaging to the skin. UVA and UVB rays both cause different types of damage, and not all sun creams protect against them in the same way, so it’s important to know the difference between the two, and what they’re responsible for.
