We reserve the right to refuse installation should our engineers think that the existing electrical or plumbing points are unsafe and in need of maintenance or if they are unable to install to existing furniture. Not so the Home 150 and 250, which each had connection issues, the app failing to find either of them repeatedly from either an iPhone or an iPad Pro, so that we had to turn to the suggested alternatives, which involve either WPS button-press connection to your router, or giving the Home 150 an Ethernet connection via the supplied cable. Buy a second Home 150 and you can configure a true stereo speaker system – all via the HEOS app. Stereo sound doesn’t just give you a bigger sound, it also more accurately reflects the soundstage of a live music recording – making you feel like you’re actually ‘there’ in the room. Pair up with the Denon DHT-S716H or Sound Bar 550 soundbars, and the Home 150 speakers become rear effect speakers – perfect for easy home cinema. What the 250 gets very right is the confident way it rides the line between keeping things engaging in the treble and pushing too far into overbrightness, something it never did, even when pressed to pumping levels, even with our Dion torture test, where the overbright recorded vocal was nicely tamed, and the band filled out by that 50Hz notch up, one of the best deliveries of this difficult mix we’ve heard from any system, in fact. The Denon Home 150 can be used as a stereo pair, or as rear surrounds for the Denon Home Sound bar 550 to create a 5.1 system. Sound Quality

Proximity-sensing buttons light up as you move your hand moves towards them. This gives seamless control, without the distracting light of permanently lit controls. The Denon Home 150 sounds reasonably meaty too. The soundstage is pretty wide for such a device, although we did wonder what it would be like with two speakers. Besides punchy bass at higher volumes, you also get smooth mids and relaxed trebles. A bit of zing would have been nice here at the top end, but crank up the volume and you'll look past that.

With its small footprint and compact dimensions, the Denon Home 150 is ideal for even the smallest spaces. Ideal for desktops, bedside tables and smaller rooms, the Home 150 is the perfect wireless speaker for any space. We confess we had problems pairing all these up into one system; the pairing failed repeatedly, because (it turned out after many hours) the units weren’t all on the same firmware. Yet they’d all received an update, and the HEOS app was telling us everything was up to date. Immerse yourself in wireless sound. Just connect a pair of Denon Home 150’s with a DHT-S716H sound bar and a DSW-1H subwoofer to create a full surround 5.1 home theatre setup.We’ve also seen (see Home 150 review) how Denon has rejigged two of its soundbars: the DHT-S716H (formerly the HEOS Bar) and the DHT-S516H (formerly the HEOS HS2, as well as the wireless active DSW-1H subwoofer, formerly the HEOS SUB. You can pair a couple of Home 150s to one of these soundbars (or a soundbar and subwoofer) In the vast majority of cases we will not be able to install the cabinet doors to built-in laundry products as the fittings very rarely match up. We will try our best however if we are unable to do this we will still install connect to plumbing and put the appliance in situ. This service is based upon best endeavour and is not guaranteed. File support includes MP3, AAC and WMA, and stretches to Hi-Res with 192kHz/24-bit FLAC, WAV, ALAC and DSD 2.8/5.6MHz. These files can be played over the network or via the rear USB port. The reflective top surface illuminates as you approach to show more controls: three ‘input selection’ touch buttons, play/pause and volume control. Again, simple and intuitive.

We do provide installation options for built-in appliances providing it is simply a case of fitting the appliance and furniture doors. Any additional work to the kitchen units or carpentry work required will need to be completed at the customer’s expense. We confess we deliberately ran the rears a little hot, pushed up to accentuate the surround; it may not be entirely correct, but it can be more fun. Conversely we levelled the subwoofer where we could just hear it, which is less intrusive. These range from the massive market-leading multichannel AV receivers made by both companies down through high-quality stereo amplifiers and on to neat little smart amps like the Marantz M-CR612 (known as the Melody X in some markets) which we had under review last issue, and which was still in residence when these Home units arrived. And, of course, any of the original HEOS range, which includes the HEOS Amp and the streaming add-on, the HEOS Link. A single Home 150 speaker sounds narrow in terms of the soundstage it produces, but pair it to a second and performance opens up with the kind of soundstage that many would be surprised at if they're more used to listening on just a single speaker. To pair and listen in stereo, group the two speakers together in the Rooms tab on the HEOS app and then tap the Stereo Pair slider.

Design and Features

The HEOS app is comprehensive and marvellously simple to use; in its earliest days we recall calling it perhaps oversimplified, but given the complexities and changes some rivals have since made, we happily withdraw that remark — the HEOS system with its three bottom navigation options gets you everywhere fast, while rapid access to the ‘Now playing’ screen makes transport and volume control easy, even in a multiroom context.
