About this deal

If the RTX 3080 Founders Edition was already completely overkill for multiplayer games like CS:GO or Rainbow Six, the RTX 3090 is well past the point of just showing off. The GeForce RTX™ 3090 is a big ferocious GPU (BFGPU) with TITAN class performance. It's powered by Ampere—NVIDIA's 2nd gen RTX architecture—doubling down on ray tracing and AI performance with enhanced RT Cores, Tensor Cores, and new streaming multiprocessors. Plus, it features a staggering 24 GB of G6X memory, all to deliver the ultimate gaming experience. I mentioned before that the RTX 3090 Ti requires a beefy power supply, and in testing that proved entirely true. The 480W power draw estimate is accurate – I measured our test rig as drawing around 100W to 130W of power at idle, and 600W when under load benchmarking the GPU. That’s a lot of power, enough to make a noticeable difference on your electric bill if you plan on gaming for a few hours or more on a daily basis. Purchasing Guide As a top-floor-with-a-view kind of card, the gaming performance of the MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Suprim outpaces any other GPU we've tested to date, and not always by a small margin. In some of the titles we tested, like Red Dead Redemption 2, the RTX 3090 was more than 20% faster than the RTX 3080 Founders Edition in 1440p, though that gain dipped to just 12% in 4K.We can't say how much extra juice MSI has imparted into its RTX 3090 over other models just yet, since Founders Edition RTX 3090 cards were in short supply from Nvidia during the RTX 30 Series launch and PCMag didn't get the opportunity to test one.

Don't sweat it, Airflow Control guides the air to exactly where it needs to be for maximum cooling. As we mentioned earlier, the RTX 3090 is based on the 8 nm "GA102" silicon, nearly maxing it out. All but one of the 42 TPCs (84 streaming multiprocessors) are enabled, resulting in a CUDA core count of 10,496, along with 328 Tensor cores, 82 RT cores, 328 TMUs, and 112 ROPs. To achieve 24 GB, the RTX 3090 maxes out the 384-bit wide memory bus on the "GA102" and uses the fastest 19.5 Gbps GDDR6X memory, which gives the card an astounding 940 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Right off the bat, you can see the 3090 Ti taking the expected lead over its predecessors, putting to bed any doubt that it is the absolute best consumer graphics card available. The real question though is by how much. The 24GB of onboard VRAM sends the RTX 3090 to new heights in these tests, setting records wherever it goes, though perhaps not by the kinds of margins that you might have been expecting given the price.

Creators can pair it with NVIDIA's feature-rich GeForce Studio drivers, while gamers can go with GeForce Game Ready drivers. That said, the RTX 3090 isn't strictly a creator's card, either. NVIDIA is taking a stab at the new 8K resolution for gaming, which is four times the pixels of 4K and sixteen times Full HD—not an easy task even for today's GPUs. The company hence innovated the new 8K DLSS feature, which leverages AI super-resolution to bring higher fidelity gaming than previously thought possible, for 8K. During its marketing blitz, Nvidia chose to focus on the RTX 3090 as the "world's first 8K gaming card," though this is disputable, depending on a huge variety of factors that won't fit in the small print. (Cards that came before the RTX 3090 can run games and applications at 8K...it's just a matter of how well.)GTX 680 | GK104-400 | 28nm | 294mm² | 3.5 BT |⠀ 1536 CCs | 128 TMUs | 32 ROPs | ⠀8 SMs | 1058 MHz | 2GB | 256MB x 8 | GDDR5 | 256-bit | ⠀192 GB/s | 200W RTX 3090 Ti | GA102-350 | 8nm | 628mm² | 28.3 BT | 10752 CCs | 336 TMUs | 112 ROPs | ⠀84 SMs | 1865 MHz | 24GB | 2048MB x 12 | GDDR6X | 384-bit | 1008 GB/s | 450W⠀⠀

MSI's exclusive Dragon Center software lets you monitor, tweak and optimize MSI products in real-time. The GeForce RTX 3090 Ti enables all 84 SM present on the GA102 silicon, which works out to 10,752 CUDA cores, 336 Tensor cores, 84 RT cores, 336 TMUs, and 112 ROPs. The RTX 3090, in comparison, has 82 SM, and the RTX 3080 Ti has 80. NVIDIA also bolstered the memory sub-system. It now uses 21 Gbps-rated GDDR6X memory instead of the 19.5 Gbps memory on the RTX 3090 and 19 Gbps memory on the RTX 3080 Ti. You get 24 GB of memory, much like the RTX 3090, which should help with creative applications that deal with large data sets. If you recall, although the RTX 3090 launched alongside the RTX 3080, it wasn't regarded NVIDIA's "flagship" product, as that was the RTX 3080. Instead, the 3090 enjoyed a "halo product" status because of its 24 GB of memory for creativity applications. Unlike other RTX 3090 cards we've reviewed, the MSI RTX 3090 Suprim X consumes considerably more power than the RTX 3090 Founders Edition. We measured 436 W average gaming power, which is over 70 W higher than the 365 W on the FE. Of course, you get 6% higher gaming performance in return, but the power cost is almost 20%. That said, if you're in the market for an RTX 3090 in the first place, power consumption is probably secondary to you anyway. All this electricity will heat up your room, though, which will be nice right now, but could be less enjoyable in the summer months. Like before, this new port links to your PSU via a 3x8-pin dongle that’s included in the box. Unlike with the 3090, OEMs have also opted to use this new connector, as can be seen on the Suprim X here. You’ll need a beefy power supply (Nvidia recommends 850w minimum) as the card has a TDP of 480 watts, up from 450w on the Founders Edition.
