The stadium hosted three matches during Euro 1996. Along with Elland Road it was assigned to Group B, which comprised France, Spain, Romania and Bulgaria. By this point the club were frustrated and desperate to redevelop and considered moving to Gosforth, however agreement was reached to develop St James’ in 1971 following mediation by minister of Sport Denis Howell. Work began with the East Stand constructed the following year. A similar stand was planned to be constructed at the Leazes End later in the decade. The roof and rear parts of the terracing was removed in preparation for this in 1978, however following relegation the same year, the club decided they could no longer afford the costs and so SJP was left with a smaller uncovered Leazes End.
