With the aim of attracting more readers, the publishers of the series had decided to drop the word Eagle from the title of the series in the year 2007. However, the idea seemed to be quite absurd and they decided to continue with the same title. I’m not going to give any more of the plot away, but let’s just say the speed of Dead Of Night and the storyline, are thrilling and utterly gripping, you will not be able to put it down. It also had me heading across to Google on several occasions to find out more about topics and people ( there are real Nazis in the books ) so as to add to the story.

On the other hand, Cato is just a teenager, who previously grew up as a slave in the Imperial Palace. At the start of the series, he joins as Macro’s Optio in the Eagles. The first book of the series is set in 42 A.D. Throughout the series, author Simon Scarrow has shared the experiences of Macro and Cato. Oye, que MUY bien esta historia clásica de inspector que busca a asesino. Ya, ya sé que eso sólo define el género. El inspector no está afiliado al partido y tiene grandes recelos sobre sus dirigentes, pero no le queda otra que asumir la investigación.This very gripping murder mystery set in Nazi Germany from the author, Simon Scarrow, is another daring project of his, and one I absolutely and fully approve. This thriller charts the beat of German life as the steady rise of Heinrich Himmler’s brutal Gestapo sees it become the dominant force, deciding and enforcing decisions on almost every aspect. This stranglehold – act now and pass legislation to justify it later – is not just the driver, but also almost the key to the action. Scarrow is a good, but not a great writer. My favorite novelist of war-era Berlin crime, Philip Kerr, had a real talent for folding historical facts seamlessly into the story. Scarrow is less smooth, with much of those facts and reactions to them playing out in Schenke’s internal monologue. Still, his plot moves along and retains interest, and I am interested to learn what happens next with Schenke, his team, and the women in his life. When a young woman is found brutally murdered, Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke is under immense pressure to solve the case, swiftly. Treated with suspicion by his superiors for his failure to join the Nazi Party, Schenke walks a perilous line - for disloyalty is a death sentence.

Other than the Eagle Series, Simon has also written a few other notable novel series’ including the Revolution series, which is based on Napoleon and Wellington. Apart from the novel series’, Simon has also penned down a couple of standalone novels. Schenke sees the paradox of his position but can do little about it- “if ideology became a licence to murder then how could there be any moral justification of such an ideology” For me, there is a clear improvement. The author has always superb stories in mind and this novel doesn't disappoint in any way. The characters are more formed now and the reader can relate to their respective evolution more. For me, I really enjoyed reading how the characters developed and grew, especially with how their own relationships with other characters within the story and universe developed. Berlin, 1940. Germany is gripped by a spell of freezing weather. Food is rationed. The war is underway, but hopes are high it will end soon as the German people mistakenly believe Hitler is a man of peace.Me apetecía ver a Scarrow fuera de su zona de confort, y lo cierto es que al final nos ha dado una novela notable y sobre todo entretenida.
