About this deal

This book is appropriate for kids ages five and up and is available in Kindle and hardcover formats. Pros and Cons of Owling: Enter the World of the Mysterious Birds of the Night by Mark Wilson Pros We’re brainwashed to believe that early birds are happier, more successful, more disciplined and all-round better human beings than night owls. The hours when I feel most alive are considered ‘ungodly’ and likened to a vampire’s schedule. Owls like myself internalise this message, and we believe we must be lazy, depressed and irresponsible.”

One of my favourite things about The Anatomical Shape of a Heart is how there is not a lot of drama. I, personally, am not a fan of those contemporaries filled with fights where the characters forgive each other after a minute. This book was pretty unrealistic with some insta-love, but I found that there wasn’t too much drama, and I will take insta-love over drama any day. This doesn’t necessarily mean that night owls can easily adjust. Many think that the ideal solution for night owls is to find work that better suits their natural rhythm. For some, this may be shift work, while others opt for flexible employment, such as setting up their own business or freelancing. I am always on the lookout for great new Urban Fantasy series and Night Owls just might fit the bill. The story started out a little rough around the edges and had some growing pains, but I was completely on board by the end. I really enjoyed the dynamic between the group of main characters and think a lot of fascinating stories could come out of this world. He had large boy hands, all sinewy and latticed with faint blue veins, and long, slender fingers. More beautiful bones. I desperately wanted to trace my fingers over them—which was insane. And stupid.”

But, sadly, these are not enough on their own. It's great that we're starting to see more YA books promoting healthy attitudes towards sex. I'm just still waiting for some really good ones. Call me Helen. If things are as bad as I think they are, we may as well dispense with the formalities.” I was worried my initial impressions would prove accurate based on the first chapter or two. But look, that's not how it went. I kind of feel like some editor told the author "Hey, this book isn't sexy enough for how we want to market it, so if you could just... fluff up those first chapters?" And so she did. The first chapters have what I guess is a typical noir attitude about what's sexy and dark and crap, but don't worry - that all clears right up soon enough, and you actually get to meet a well-developed, don't-rely-on-sexy-times-to-be-interesting cast of characters. Opening Sentence: Father Value had taught Elly everything she knew about living to see another day.

Only, she wasn’t feeling any relief. Elly looked out a window into the night. Somewhere out there, the Creeps were coming. A day, maybe two, and they’d find her here. They wouldn’t be kind to anyone aiding her. What, exactly, is the anatomical shape of a heart? I can tell you. It's a bloodied splat on the floor, with gory little pieces of bodily tissue everywhere because that's what it looks like after I've stomped on the figurative heart within this book for 10 minutes after having read it. This book is loaded with over 750 diverse photographs that are used to help inform the reader about owls. Owls of the World: A Photographic Guide was written by the world’s most notable owl expert, Heimo Mikkola. Dr. Mikkola is associated with the University of Eastern Finland, Helsinki, and is known for having traveled across 128 different countries over the past 40 years, journaling on all 249 species of owls. This book summarizes his findings, with all the complex details penned down as simply as possible. Therefore, while this may be a tedious read for some, it’s the most well-structured book for an avid owl enthusiast. A recent study of a modern-day hunter-gatherer tribe found that during a three-week period, there were only 18 minutes during which all of the 33 tribe members were asleep simultaneously. Espie has treated night owls who want to adapt their sleeping patterns. He does this by asking night owls to gradually shift their sleeping pattern earlier, usually by 15 minutes or half an hour per week, through doses of bright light in the morning. This causes the brain to shut down the production of melatonin, the hormone that causes sleepiness. In the evening, night owls must make their bedrooms as dark as possible.

Over the past 40 years, author Dr. Heimo Mikkola, has traveled to 128 countries to journal all 249 species of owls. This children’s book was written by Laura Marsh, an author who has published over 20 books as an author and editor, including several for the National Geographic Readers series. Jenn Bennett is a new to me author, even though she’s not by any means a new author. This is her first YA title and I’m so, so happy she’s jumped in this genre.

Did you know that nesting habits differ from owl species to species? Or that they rip right through the flesh of their prey while stabbing it to death with their sharp beak? Gail Gibbons taps into things we don’t know about an owl’s nocturnal lifestyle in this nonfiction picture book. The author covers their habitat, birth and development, the threats and predators they face, and their diet. More specifically, this book dives into how different species of owls differ from one another via detailed illustrations and appealing infographics for children. NIGHT OWLS has a fairly expansive cast. There's Valerie, the vampire bookstore owner, and her Renfield and another bookstore employee. There's Elly, a Creep-hunter out to avenge her mentor, and her estranged brother. (And a few allies.) You see, in the world of NIGHT OWLS there's more than one kind of human-eating monster. The Creeps are dying off, but they might've found a way to reproduce. It's up to the five good guys and their friends to stop them. Urban fantasy traditionally focuses on one main character right? Well, Night Owls has multiple PoVs including a number of chapters from secondary characters’ perspectives. I thought this worked great to convey more depth for each of the characters (seeing them from other perspectives was cool) and what all was going on in the plot. The first half of the book the plot was tight and exciting, but somewhere after the midway point, the book became a bit scattered and I wasn't quite as engaged. It felt like the plot presented too many story lines and at the end, I was left with so many unanswered questions. Even though there isn't a cliffhanger, there wasn't a lot of resolution. I still didn't know what was in the book and whether the information was lost, I didn't understand what was going on with the other vampires, I wanted desperately to know what happened in the past between Cavale and Elly, and I wanted to know more about the relationship between Chaz and Val. There were far too many loose threads for my taste. Night Owls is fun. It manages to hit that balance that keeps all the dark, heavy scenes and all their impact – while still keeping a lightness that is fun which is really really hard to do. Usually one or other has to be sacrificed
