Description

Pour the cake batter into the prepared baking tin and bake in the centre of the oven for 1 hour. (See notes.) This is the perfect cake for novice bakers as it comes together in literally five minutes without the need of a mixer. You will be amazed that such a simple cake tastes quite so delicious!

Fruity - instead of ginger, try stirring in mixed peel, cherries, cranberries, dates, raisins, sultanas, etc. Or stir in some ready made mincemeat Bake it as a traybake, cut into squares and serve warm with custard or vanilla ice cream and you have a wonderful dessert that will have everyone ask for seconds .This lovely loaf only takes an hour to bake and uses simple, everyday ingredients. Cut it into slices and enjoy it with a cup of tea. Or serve it warm with some custard or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a top-notch old school pud. Step five– As soon as the cake is ready, poke little holes all over the cake using a sharp, thin skewer, going almost all the way to the bottom. Stir together two tablespoons golden syrup and one tablespoon of boiling water. Slowly spoon the syrup all over the surface of the cake. Leave the cake to cool in the tin completely.

So what about this Golden Syrup Cake then? Well, I know we used to buy the McVitie's version along with Jamaica Ginger Cake and we'd have a slice as a treat after tea. Brush your cake with a little extra golden syrup – though this is optional, the cake is plenty sweet on its own. Decorate with orange zest strips or leave plain. How to serve syrup cake Plain flour - for a gluten free Jamaican ginger stem cake, use GF plain or all-purpose flour with ⅓ teaspoon xanthan gum for a less crumbly cake Melt the golden syrup, butter and brown sugar together in a medium saucepan over a low heat until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat and leave for a few minutes to cool down slightly.

McVities Ginger Nuts

This recipe has been carefully measured in grams and US cups so you can enjoy it wherever you are in the world! Stem ginger - to save money, swap for crystalised ginger, 2 tablespoon of fresh ginger, peeled and grated. Or a much cheaper way is to use mixed peel for citrus flavours with a similar texture Don't overheat the butter, sugar and syrup. It only needs to be just melted not brought to the boil.

NEED TO KNOW No self raising flour? Make your own! Use 2 cups (240g) plain flour plus 4 teaspoons of baking powder. Make sure your baking powder is in date! How to make Golden Syrup Cake Key tips: Don't open the oven until 50 minutes is up and don't attempt to skewer test a wobbly top cake as it may sink.baking powder makes the cake rise and bicarbonate of soda helps to lighten the texture of the cake Without any rising agent, the cake would be extremely dense and heavy. While melting butter and sugar mix, scrape the bottom of the pan to test if you can feel grit at the bottom. If you can, then the sugar has not dissolved yet! The McVities Golden Syrup Cake is a hearty loaf style cake, perfect for filling a hole and sorting out any sugar cravings for a good long while. Once you have torn open the outer wrapping, see how long your willpower lasts before the whole thing is gone! Spices - I use a mix of ground ginger, mixed spice (or all spice), ground cinnamon, nutmeg and salt
