A landmark illustrated anthology of queer Greek and Roman love stories that reclaim and celebrate homosexual love and sensuality, from artist Luke Edward Hall and award-winning poet Seán Hewitt.

The hotel is entered via a vivid lobby, where Hall has created a riotous collision of pattern and colour. The lower half of the walls have been painted pea-green, while the upper half has been covered in chintzy, pale blue wallpaper with a maroon-coloured motif. Each room features geometric carpeting, a candy-striped headboard and a canary-yellow armchair and pouf created bespoke by Hall. I love the idea of serious, distinguished antiques, provenance and patina, but I also love interiors with a sense of wit and nonchalance about them. I want irreverence, I want playfulness. It’s most fun when the serious and the spirited combine. One of my favourite rooms ever, the drawing room in the Paris apartment of Princess Caroline Murat Guest and Raymond Guest, was created in the 1960s by the Cuban architect and designer Emilio Terry, a hero of mine known for his take on the Baroque.The designer has also personalised the reading lamps above the bedside tables with sketchy doodles of martini glasses, the Eiffel tower and different French words. Unsurprisingly most of the tales are of male relationships, yearning and loss. To call the Greeks patriarchal is being kind--chauvinistic and misogynistic is more accurate. Even so, Sapphic relationships have a decent showing and there is the occasional Butch/Dyke or Gender Fluid Tale that defies category. They were perhaps most startling and remarkable of all. This is a welcome and beautifully presented effort. Hotel Les Deux Gares is the first large-scale interiors project by Luke Edward Hall, who set up his self-titled design studio in 2015. Among his enchanting mix of chic and worldly objects, a toy troll stares out — one of those ones with giant googly eyes and a mound of white marshmallow hair. I’m sure this troll must have had a fascinating story to tell. I’m just glad it was able to enjoy prime place alongside Le-Tan’s Cocteau sketches and ancient classical fragments.
