Louise comes from a long line of incredibly strong omen, whose stories I cannot wait to read, and her drive to do more, to be more, then the limits of what women at the time can do id inspirational in itself. Gilles story is as heart wrenching as it is powerful, not giving to much away, but the struggles he goes through by being forced by his own mother to be someone he isn’t and seeing the character rise from that and take control of their own agency was just a delight to read. The Ghost Ship is third in the series of novels inspired by the seventeenth century Huguenot diaspora. The novels travel from France during the sixteenth century to the Cape of Good Hope by way of Rochelle, Amsterdam and the Canary Islands. Then, as always, the dream darkens. Always the same shift from exhilaration to despair. The sailors laughing when she says that, one day, she will be the captain of a ship. Not understanding why everyone is laughing, she feels humiliated. Her grandfather bends down to explain that girls cannot go to sea, though there is much they can do on dry land.

I didn't realize this was the third book in a series until after I'd bought it, but having read it that wasn't a problem. This book works perfectly well as a standalone. This is Book 3 in her Joubert Family Chronicles, that are inspired by the Huguenot diaspora. It follows on from ‘The Burning Chamber’ (2018) and ‘The City of Tears’ (2021).Transporting, intelligent, heartwarming and intriguing, this is historical fiction at its finest - Lucy Atkins, author of Magpie Lane One floor below, Louise’s grandmother, Minou, lay in her bed staring up at the wooden ceiling of her chamber and thought how, of all places, she most hated Paris.

I am sure there was a lot of story before this one that lead to what happens in The Ghost Ship. Having said that, if you are like me and haven't read the others, you definitely won't be disappointed or have a hard time reading this. In fact, this can absolutely be read as a standalone. The Ghost Ship’ is an evocative read that sweeps you along with its rich historical details and beautiful writing. This is the third book in the ‘Burning Chambers’ series that follows the Reydon-Joubert family but it absolutely can be read as a stand-alone story. I have been a huge fan of Kate Mosse’s books and this was a welcome return to the series. It did not disappoint! As with the previous stories in the series which I loved, The Ghost Ship features a strong central female character.
