Over the years, I’ve bought and used many Harry Potter themed chess sets. This puts me in a position to talk about the pros and cons of buying a particular set. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry had a long history of producing talented Wizard's Chess players, such as the chess master Walter Aragon, as well as Brian Gagwilde, both of whom later became Headmasters at the school. Despite the school's relation to Wizard's Chess, however, they had a longstanding rivalry with Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. In an unknown year, students from the two schools played in a chess tournament, in which Hogwarts suffered a devastating loss, and Beauxbatons had remained undefeated ever since. [3] The chess pieces are made out of die-cast zinc and PVC so apart from being extremely beautiful, they are extremely sturdy as well. Since they are metal, the pieces are very heavy and look exactly like the ones in the movie. The chessmen resemble the original pieces from the movie and are highly detailed. Different pieces can be seen carrying different weapons just like in the movie.
Since the reunion of the famous trio and more stars is coming to the TV on New Year's Eve, I thought it would be a great idea to review the famous chess game from the Harry Potter series. If you are a huge Harry Potter fan, you must have remembered this scene. In the first movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, there's actually two chess scenes. The "Dragon Variation of the Slytherin Defence" appears to be a pun on the real-world Sicilian Defence, Dragon Variation.A lot of thought actually went into this larger than life wizard’s chess scene, and there was a lot of work going into it behind the scenes (apart from the construction of those giant pieces!) The kids had to get on the board and stand in for pieces that had been captured in a previous game, putting themselves directly in harm’s way! The pieces are quite large for the 2” squares of the Harry Potter The Final Challenge Chess Set. You will have to be careful not to run into other pieces when making your moves. Other than that, the gameplay is very enjoyable and is as good as it gets with movie-themed chess sets.

The board – which is made up of cardboard – folds up in four sections and it not as good as the pieces. The fact that it folds up is not ideal for gameplay since one or the other section may end up not sitting perfectly flat which can hinder gameplay. The size of the board is also very small which can make the pieces cramped up. We think IM Silman’s position would be the perfect addition to the book, though it may make non chess player’s eyes glaze over. The chess pieces of this set are made up of moderately heavy plastic mixed with another material that provides some flexibility. It’s not by any means the highest quality but still durable enough for kids to handle (or mishandle). In case you drop a piece on the floor and it breaks, you may not be able to use the ‘reparo’ spell to repair it. So, I would advise handling the pieces with care. In the 1995–1996 school year, there were multiple Wizard's Chess champions at Hogwarts: at least five Gryffindor champions in the Gryffindor common room, the Slytherin champion in the Great Hall, and the Ravenclaw champion in the Library.
