About this deal

Over the years, I’ve bought and used many Harry Potter themed chess sets. This puts me in a position to talk about the pros and cons of buying a particular set. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry had a long history of producing talented Wizard's Chess players, such as the chess master Walter Aragon, as well as Brian Gagwilde, both of whom later became Headmasters at the school. Despite the school's relation to Wizard's Chess, however, they had a longstanding rivalry with Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. In an unknown year, students from the two schools played in a chess tournament, in which Hogwarts suffered a devastating loss, and Beauxbatons had remained undefeated ever since. [3] The chess pieces are made out of die-cast zinc and PVC so apart from being extremely beautiful, they are extremely sturdy as well. Since they are metal, the pieces are very heavy and look exactly like the ones in the movie. The chessmen resemble the original pieces from the movie and are highly detailed. Different pieces can be seen carrying different weapons just like in the movie.

Since the reunion of the famous trio and more stars is coming to the TV on New Year's Eve, I thought it would be a great idea to review the famous chess game from the Harry Potter series. If you are a huge Harry Potter fan, you must have remembered this scene. In the first movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, there's actually two chess scenes. The "Dragon Variation of the Slytherin Defence" appears to be a pun on the real-world Sicilian Defence, Dragon Variation.A lot of thought actually went into this larger than life wizard’s chess scene, and there was a lot of work going into it behind the scenes (apart from the construction of those giant pieces!) International Master Jeremy Silman was the mind behind the chess scene in the Harry Potter movie, and he is the one who designed the chess position we see on the screen and all of its subsequent moves. Unfortunately for chess enthusiasts, a lot of his moves were cut from the final version of the movie, which resulted in moves that didn’t seem to make much sense to those of us who are familiar with the rules of chess. The appearance of the pieces is also very good and the shapes are really well defined. The craftsmanship really shows through when you compare the chessmen to the ones in the Harry Potter movie chess scene. The pieces replicate the movie chessmen almost perfectly. The kids had to get on the board and stand in for pieces that had been captured in a previous game, putting themselves directly in harm’s way! The pieces are quite large for the 2” squares of the Harry Potter The Final Challenge Chess Set. You will have to be careful not to run into other pieces when making your moves. Other than that, the gameplay is very enjoyable and is as good as it gets with movie-themed chess sets.

During the 1988–1989 school year, Jacob's sibling and Chiara Lobosca played Wizard's Chess to help themselves think the situation through after Ismelda Murk attempted to capture Chiara and reveal her werewolf identity. [10] 1990s [ ] During the 1988–1989 school year, Jacob's sibling and several of their friends participated in the Walter Aragon Wizard Chess Competition, named after former Hogwarts Headmaster Walter Aragon, in Flourish and Blotts. Jacob's sibling managed to defeat the esteemed chess player Celine Castillon of Beauxbatons in the tournament. [3] Imagine putting those pieces together to get the gorgeous end result you see in the picture above. Unfortunately, imagination is all we have for now for this beautiful Lego Harry Potter chess set. But, in the Harry Potter universe, chess is more than just a fun way to pass the time- it can also be deadly! Which is perhaps unsurprising, since many things that are completely innocuous in our world can be deadly in the Harry Potter universe, including willow trees, mermaids, staircases, and so much more. Hogwarts is a surprisingly dangerous place!Well, Potterheads can raise their wands in delight. You can now recreate the famous chess scene at home with the new Wizard’s Edition Chess Set. FUN TO PLAY ANYWHERE - includes 32 highly-detailed moulded plastic chess pieces measuring between 5 to 11.5 cms in height, and a playing board approximately 47cm square. This Harry Potter themed chess set from The Noble Collection is a cool, fun, chess set that will keep the kids entertained and works perfectly as a gift. For hardcore Harry Potter fans and chess nerds as well, this set is the perfect combination – a true collector’s item. Original Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone Movie Chess Set e4 d5 2. exd5: Played by the white side of the giant chess board in the Chessboard Chamber against Ronald Weasley. Also known as the Main Line of the Scandinavian Defence. [15]

The board – which is made up of cardboard – folds up in four sections and it not as good as the pieces. The fact that it folds up is not ideal for gameplay since one or the other section may end up not sitting perfectly flat which can hinder gameplay. The size of the board is also very small which can make the pieces cramped up. On 2 September 1890, Imelda Reyes could be seen in the Slytherin common room spectating, and offering unsolicited advice on, a Wizard's Chess game between a Slytherin boy and a girl whom he was playing. [5] 1980s [ ]In the 1985–1986 school year, Professor Minerva McGonagall played a game of Wizard's Chess when being interviewed by Jacob's sibling for their presentation at that year's Teacher Appreciation Celebration. The game underwent several phases, with McGonagall eventually winning the game. She gave one of her chess sets to Jacob's sibling as a memento. [7] Of course, this chess scene was not described in such detail in the book, either. Perhaps it’s because J.K. Rowling didn’t have an International Master chess player consulting with her while she was writing her first book of a series that would, unbeknownst to her at the time, become one of the best selling children’s novels in history. If she had known that, or had the help of a chess professional on her side, she likely would have included more detail on the chess scene. We think IM Silman’s position would be the perfect addition to the book, though it may make non chess player’s eyes glaze over. The chess pieces of this set are made up of moderately heavy plastic mixed with another material that provides some flexibility. It’s not by any means the highest quality but still durable enough for kids to handle (or mishandle). In case you drop a piece on the floor and it breaks, you may not be able to use the ‘reparo’ spell to repair it. So, I would advise handling the pieces with care. In the 1995–1996 school year, there were multiple Wizard's Chess champions at Hogwarts: at least five Gryffindor champions in the Gryffindor common room, the Slytherin champion in the Great Hall, and the Ravenclaw champion in the Library. [4] Casual games [ ] 1890s [ ]

In the position shown on the board, play would have continued as follows (moves written in algebraic notation): This themed Harry Potter Wizard Chess Set is manufactured by The Noble Collection under license from Warner Brothers which means you get an exact replica of the original chess set from the Sorcerer’s Stone movie. A similar concept is featured in Mikhail Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita, where Professor Woland (alias Satan) and his retinue play with a supernatural chess set whose pieces are animate and move by themselves.Ronald Weasley owned a Wizard's Chess set which he inherited from his grandfather. Unlike many of his hand-me-down possessions, the second-hand chess set was advantageous as the pieces trusted him. When Harry Potter played with Seamus Finnigan's chess men, they did not trust his judgement and offered him advice. [1] The great news for chess-loving Potterheads is that you can own a chess set that’s virtually identical to the one played by Harry and Ron – albeit completely inanimate!
