During the Seven Years War (1756-63), soldiers from both battalions of the 1st Foot Guards took part in the raid on St Malo (1758) and later served in Germany with the Guards Brigade, fighting at Wilhelmstal (1762). A 3rd Battalion was raised in 1760. The Regimental family of the Coldstream Guards places great importance on remembering and honouring the service of those comrades who have gone before us. At its heart this story is essentially a very human one. A story of young men with their whole lives ahead of them torn away from all that they knew and loved, to answer a call of service to others and deter a tyrannical ideology from destroying a way of life which we hold dear today. In answering that call these men paid the ultimate sacrifice, but in doing so left a legacy which is enjoyed today throughout western Europe. A legacy hard won and achieved at great cost. Anodised Aluminium badges were first introduced in 1948 when the Army Clothing Department asked manufacturers to produce badges from a new metal that would eliminate the need for polishing and would stay bright and clean all the time. An additional benefit for the army was that the new 'Staybright' badges were cheaper than the old brass versions. Few Kings crown Staybrite badges were made but by around 1953 the British Army began to use Staybright cap badges on large scale replacing the old metals versions. Anodised Aluminium consists of anodising which is an electro-plating process resulting in a lightweight shiny badge, this is used because it is cheap, flexible and does not require as much maintenance as brass badges. The remains of Gdsm Bayliss were identified after his nephew agreed to assist with DNA testing. Having found a positive DNA match to some of the remains, the rest were then tested and a further match was found to the son of Gdsm Blyth. During the Crimean War, the Coldstream Regiment fought in the battles of Alma, Inkerman and Sevastopol. On its return, four men of the regiment were awarded the newly instituted Victoria Cross. [7]

The Coldstream Guards is the oldest continuously serving regular [b] regiment in the British Army. [2] As part of the Household Division, one of its principal roles is the protection of the monarchy; due to this, it often participates in state ceremonial occasions. The Regiment has consistently provided formations on deployments around the world and has fought in the majority of the major conflicts in which the British Army has been engaged. [3] Then, in August 1914, three Coldstream Battalions were deployed to France, and saw action at Mons, the Marne, and the Aisne before being committed to the defence of Ypres where the 1st Battalion almost ceased to exist at the Battle of Gheluvelt. They include such famous names as The Queen’s Royal Hussars, The Parachute Regiment, the Gurkhas and the Grenadier Guards. Gdsm Bayliss was a young man with an exciting future ahead of him. He was recently married and had just discovered he was to become a father. Gdsm Blyth had a wife and young son who grew up not knowing what had happened to his father and spent nearly 50 years searching for answers. The focus is often placed on the sacrifice made by soldiers such as Gdsm Bayliss and Gdsm Blyth, but this story also brings home the reality of life for those they left behind: young widows who struggled without their husbands, a daughter who would never meet her father and a son who only knew his father as an infant. I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to meet Gdsm Bayliss’ grandsons and wider family and Gdsm Blyth’s son, Peter, and to have been part of their stories. The 1st Battalion took part in the unsuccessful raid on St Malo (1758) during the Seven Years War (1756-63). That conflict also saw 2nd Battalion serve in Germany, where it fought at the Battle of Wilhelmstal (1762). Following the outbreak of the Second World War, the 1st and 2nd Battalions deployed to France with the British Expeditionary Force. They were evacuated from Dunkirk the following year.
