About this deal

Conclusion: The new Actik Core is a winner, as it is exceptionally bright, light, comfortable, easy to charge, has good battery life and will not break the bank. The Petzl Actik Core 450is a great headlamp for camping and it's also the best headlamp overall in our guide. It's a durable, reliable, bright but comfortable headlamp with a white and red light option. The Storm 400 is IP67 rated — completely protected from dirt and dust ingress and is waterproof to a depth of one meter (in 30-minute test conditions). It's ideal if you're a part-time hiker, caver, climber or such. The three dimmable LEDs add versatility. The green light can make reading more straightforward, this might be helpful if you have to read an instruction manual or a map to get to your location. For safety purposes, the headband is reflective when another light is shone on it and is equipped with an emergency whistle for rescue situations if the time ever comes. If you get caught out in a shower, the Actik is rated IPX4, therefore it'll resist light to medium showers of rain before anything begins to pass through. It's water resistant, basically.

This headlamp also comes with a host of other useful features. It's rated at IP67, meaning that it is fully waterproof and dustproof for up to a meter (which we successfully put to the test in our Knog Bilby 400 headlamp review). What makes it the most customizable headlamp on our list is its ModeMaker app for PC or Mac. Simply plug the headlamp into a USB port and you can set up 14 different saved modes for your headlamp to suit your preferences. Nitecore NU31: A durable headlamp that's built to last in all environments and weather. There's a slight green tint in the white light, but this wouldn't bother most users. The headtorch comes with Petzel’s rechargeable Core battery which charges with a micro-USB, so you can charge the torch almost anywhere. This is the headtorch I take away if I'm on a multi-day hike as being able to charge on the go gives me the confidence, that I'm not suddenly running out of charge and potentially finding myself in a dangerous situation. The headtorch also can be powered with three AAA batteries The torch has three main settings 7 lumens, perfect for finding something in your tent, 100 lumens for running and such at dusk, and 600 which is perfect for any night time activities in the full dark. It also has a red light setting for when you don’t want to disturb your camping buddy Olight Perun 2: A robust and versatile flashlight that can be used in a multitude of situations thanks to it's three mounting options including occasionally being worn as a headlamp. Several lighting modes are present such as a red lighting mode to preserve night vision, an economy mode which reduces the light to 5 lumens and will run for 160 hours and a strobe light which is visible at 700m for 350 hours. On maximum brightness the light will travel 95 metres, ideal for mountaineering, trail running and mountain biking. A wide beam or a mixed beam allow you to change the lighting patterns according to your activity. A smaller circle of light will travel further in a smaller area, however a larger area of light will light up a larger area but travel less distance.

This headlamp will suit most general use requirements, not just sky watchers. It uses a single button operation that is obvious to the touch and responsive, so it can easily be operated when wearing gloves on those cold nights. The battery compartment is easy to open too, either to change the batteries or to plug it into a power bank using a micro-USB charger. The new Actik Core is amazingly bright for its size and even though it has gained 7 grams over the previous model (at least by my scale), it is still very light and compact. In a festival environment, we used the max brightness mode to find our way across the field to the portaloos and the standard beam to do the camp cooking. We used the dimmest mode to sort out our messy tent after dusk, and the red light while chatting and socializing. It's perfect for all scenarios, except one. The Petzl Actik Core has a water resistance rating of IP X4. This means it is acceptable for light rain but should you find yourself out in a storm with lots of driving rain, you'd probably want to put it away, and it definitely isn't submersible. Petzl ACTIK CORE 450: Functionality Durable, comfortable, and versatile, the Petzl Actik Core is a fantastic headlamp for use in just about any activity. We appreciate its bright lamp and rechargeable batteries, which should be standard on just about every high-end headlamp these days. This model features Petzl’s trademark reliability and great build-quality too, making it easy to recommend to anyone shopping for a new light source for use in the outdoors. BioLite Headlamp 330: An affordable lightweight headlamp from an admirable company that's easy to operate and comfortable to wear.

But we also found the Olight Perun 2 a fantastic light for camping thanks to its clever design features. We loved how you can attach it to a tent pole via its magnetic base and even set a three or nine minute timer so that it will automatically turn off without you needing to leave your sleeping bag. What is the best budget headlamp? The hue is a somewhat harsh white and is my only real complaint, as it does not bring out contrast as well as the warmer hued lamps as Kogalla ( RTR Review ) and Ledlenser ( RTR Review ) recent lamps do. A lightweight and powerful, rechargeable headlamp, with 3 light settings, and an impressive 600 lumens of power in a torch that weighs less than 100 grams. Petzl says: It takes a whopping 4 x AAA batteries, so we'd recommend getting yourself a charger and some rechargeable batteries to keep long-term costs down. It has a useful battery life indicator (green 100%-50%, yellow 50%-25% and red 25%- 0%) so you don't get caught out.

The headband is very stretchy and can be worn for prolonged periods of time without it causing any irritation. If you're looking for a more traditional headlamp design and you require a red light as well as a white light, then the Nitecore NU31 headlamp is the brightest option. It offers 550 lumens on Turbo mode whilst still maintaining a five-hour runtime thanks to its 1,800 mAh rechargeable battery. What makes a good headlamp? Any of these headlamps can be used as an excellent skywatching or astrophotography companion, as each of them has red lights and dimmable modes. The other features and specifications come down to personal preference and budget, although our chosen models aren't miles apart in these respects. Personally, we'd insist on rechargeable batteries because they are environmentally and economically better. Although the Knog Bilby has extensive features, this does mean that it's not as intuitive as some headlamps, so it's well worth reading through the instruction manual before you take it out anywhere.Silva Terra Scout XT: A fairly typically styled headlamp that can be tilted anywhere from 0-90% from your forehead. We love that the materials are responsible and recyclable. Compatible with mounting accessories that allow the lamp to be attached to any kind of helmet, or to a bicycle
