Description

I loved that Gibbons has examined the effect of returning home from a fantastical journey, examining how that may affect those who experienced it. Imogen describes her 'worry creatures' which are her fears, and those feelings or thoughts that she struggles to voice to those around her. This examination of mental health is fantastic for young readers. It shows that it is normal to have some difficult feelings sometimes, but it also provides hope. Without wanting to give anything away, this tale also provides the message that you don't always have to be large to make a difference. Imogen and Marie's mum is going on a date, so their Grandma takes them out for tea - but when Imogen spots a beautiful moth in the gardens, she can't help but follow it through a door in a tree... The characters themselves were wonderful, and I felt so attached to them all by the end! (Especially Prince Miro, Imogen and Marie!- saying goodbye was bitter-sweet) This book is a sensational book and I highly recommend anyone who is a fan of adventure and excitement should read this book.

Hailed as "the arrival of a modern classic", the synopsis reads: "As the irrepressible Imogen follows a silver moth to a door in a tree – and through it into another world – children everywhere will wish they could follow in her footsteps…"

And then, with just a little bit of imagination and math you can do what explorers, adventurers, and astronomers have been doing for centuries – tell time using the stars! Northern Hemisphere Stars The stars in the Big Dipper are also part of the constellation Ursa Major. The Big Dipper is also known as the Plough, Saptarishi (Seven Sages), or Butcher’s Cleaver. It is one of the most well-known asterisms in history. It has been used by explorers, stargazers, and astronomers to locate the North Star. Chris Riddell's illustrations, as always, breathes life, they really captured the book's whimsical vibe. I adored the little character portraits at the start. Contrary to popular belief, the Big Dipper is not a constellation but asterism – which is a pattern of stars recognizable to observers from Earth. Asterisms may or may not be part of a constellation. Some asterisms like the Diamond of Virgo, also known as the Great Diamond, are made up of stars from different constellations. This was one cute, little MG fantasy. Right from the title to the very plot, this beautiful story is quite enough to satiate one's appetite for more magical adventures and lost realms and kingdoms.

Imogen, Marie and Miroslav are also beautifully written and utterly relatable - Imogen is often obstinate, but has a delightfully feisty spirit and a heartwarming sibling bond with Marie. And Miro might be spoiled, but he's also lonely - something the sisters help him to overcome. Sisters Imogen and Marie have wild imaginations. They don’t like each other, or their mother’s boyfriends. I went into this book not having read the first but as an experienced reader, I caught on to what I had missed and I would like to say that Francesca Gibbons is an incredible writer. This book is absolutely mind-blowing. Personal growth occurs in the girls as they discover a strength and resilience which otherwise they would never have known on the other side of the door. They are also transformed by the quest they undertake up the fierce mountain to the Maudree Kral, leader of the skret, and the only one who can guide them to the door of return. Miro is the prince in the world they come to and he becomes a more major character as time goes. I enjoyed seeing him but I do think he and the sisters are a little simple at times, likely because it’s aimed at children, and they come across a little two dimensional at moments. I would have liked a little more thought and depth on them, but I did like their blossoming friendships. On the third floor, there’s not a whole lot to see but the Watchmaker is up here, along with a Wheels table. We can’t challenge him unless you’ve defeated other Wheels players, so ignore that for now. More importantly, the Watchmaker will hand over the Master Key. Just like that, with no fuss. What a bonus! From here, return to Cael. With the Acolytes defeated, there’s a bigger problem afoot. The Dweller of Strife has awoken. Proceed into the next room, save and rest up. It’s highly advisable here to cook up as many dishes that replenish lots of HP and MP together. Bouillabaisse is a personal favourite, as is Mooncradle Fish Pie. When you’re ready, head out into the next area on the right. This is not a story for the faint-hearted! There are some rather gruesome details. The monsters like to “slice and dice” their victims. Prejudice and bigotry are demonstrated by some characters. I found the cruelty to animals confronting. The story and characters create many points for discussion which will make this a useful book in classrooms, libraries and at home. Reader notes or teaching notes would be useful. In addition, the Earth’s daily rotation around its axis makes it seem like that the stars close to the celestial poles revolve around the pole once each day. Because of this, constellations and stars close to the celestial poles, such as the Big Dipper, can be used to estimate time during the night. The North Star

Secondly, I really like a good old portal fantasy where the kids are swept up in the adventure and journey to a whole new land. It’s a troupe which has been done many times, but it’s fun and easy and I like the adventure. But what they find in the lands beyond will change everything again, and see them facing dangers they could never have imagined. Before you go on to learn how to tell the time, you have one last thing to do. Draw another imaginary line straight up from the North Star. This line will mark midnight or the passing of 24 hours. And when danger threatens the kingdom and the crew are getting ready to save it, you start biting your nails. I watched their friendship grow and loved it. What I loved the most was watching Imogen get closer to her little sister Marie. That special sister bond was beautiful! Francesca Gibbons’s writing is so captivating, the world building phenomenal and the action suspenseful.

Twelve-year-old Fran would be wildly excited to know that you might read her book. She’s the one who thought it’d be fun to write a story about a door in a tree.Grown-up Fran feels exactly the same way – although she has made some changes to the plot. Gibbons, who worked as a copywriter at a marketing agency before leaving to focus on her career as a children’s author, added: “Being published by HarperCollins and working with Chris Riddell is a dream come true – not just for grown-up Fran, but for my 12-year-old self. That’s how old I was when I first had the idea for the story. I still can’t quite believe that it’s going to be read by other children – and maybe a few adults too.”Es ist ein Nachtfalter, der Imogen die Tür im Baum zeigt.
