About this deal

Ever wondered how to make two tone frosting? With Cake Décor’s range of striped frostings you don’t need special equipment to make beautiful multi-coloured swirls on your cupcakes. There’s no messing around with piping bags, or piping tips – our tubes come with an attached star piping nozzle so you’re ready to go! Divide some of the white frosting into 4 separate bowls and color them with the food coloring. I chose pink, purple, yellow, and blue to match my party printables theme.

Tap off any dipping excess candy. (Speaking of excess candy, any candy that is leftover can be transferred to an airtight container, and you can re-melt it for another recipe.) Tip #1: Never frost and decorate a cake on the day you baked it. In other words, always prep the sponge and frosting the day or night before. Freshly baked sponges are a wonky/collapsed cake waiting to happen – especially if you’re layering them 6-sponges high! Add the buttercream to a large piping bag fitted with the Ateco 809 piping tip (or a similarly large round one).I don’t recommend using nonpareils, they can streak the batter, creating either a tie dye effect or even a mixed muddy color if they’re overmixed. Make the batter. Cream sugar together with oil, eggs, and vanilla, followed by sour cream. Next, combine the dry ingredients separately. Add the mixture to the batter a little at a time, alternating with the milk until combined. The batter will be on the thinner side, so make sure that you stir the batter well from bottom to top after mixing. If your unicorn lover is a chocolate lover, then by all means, use my favorite chocolate cupcake recipe instead. Dip pretzels into melted candy, and using a spoon, cover the pretzel about two-thirds with melted candy. As you can read in the cupcake recipe, I separated the batter into 4 batches and then added yellow, teal, magenta, and pink icing gel. I’ve discovered that 2 tablespoons is the perfect amount of batter for a cupcake liner so for each color I plop in a ½ tablespoon.

White– Frosting that’s left as is, uncolored. I combine white and purple frosting when piping the marbled swirl that you can see in the picture below. Use an open star tip with purple frosting to pipe out the small tight swirls, starting in the center and swirling out. I used a single piping bag for the unicorn mane hair. So, how did I manage to get two streaks of color? Unicorn Cupcakes are such a fun way to celebrate a birthday! Fill vanilla cupcakes with sprinkles and top with a swirled colorful frosting. Kids and adults will love this easy cupcake recipe! On the other hand, the mini ice cream cones have a much more plain flavor since it’s just simple wafer cones. They’re not filled, but that also means it’s easier to coat them with chocolate. However, you’ll have to snip off a part of the bottom of the cones, unlike with the Muddy Bites. You could leave them full-sized but they’d be BIG horns.

Baking the cupcakes and making the buttercream in advance will make the process super simple, giving you more time to decorate when it’s time to assemble them. Make the Unicorn Horns Then, I went wild with the sprinkles. I found this neon-colored sprinkles mix of jimmy sprinkles, confetti sprinkles, balls, and stars on Etsy, too. They stand out against any frosting color. Oil and Butter: I use both oil and butter in almost all my cake recipes because I like the structure and flavor of butter and the moisture from oil. Any kind of neutral flavored oil works.

Rainbow Swirl Icing Method

Next, add an additional 2 cups of powdered sugar and beat on low speed until sugar is incorporated. Increase speed to medium-high and beat for 3 minutes. To color your frosting bright, unicorn-themed colors, you’ll need good quality food-grade dyes. I recommend using gel food dyes, like the ones from Wilton Color Right or AmeriColor. Gel dyes are more potent than traditional food coloring (like the kind you find in supermarkets) and won’t water down your buttercream. See my how-to guide for coloring frosting, linked above, for details. Tools You’ll Need for Decorating Sour Cream–In addition to the oil, sour cream is my second secret to the fluffiest, moist cupcakes. I This recipe will also work with Greek yogurt if you’re out of sour cream. Just be sure it’s at room temperature. Use a spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl and stir the batter from the bottom to the top to ensure it’s well mixed.

Today, we’re going to brighten up your next birthday or celebration with these dreamy frosted unicorn cupcakes! These delightfully decorated cupcakes are my interpretation of the viral unicorn cupcake trend, with no horns and ears required.
