I started by measuring the raw power of the vacuum cleaner in AirWatts (AW). On Eco mode, the cleaner had a reasonable amount of power at 39AW. On the CleanSense setting, the vacuum cleaner started at 118AW by default, but it does ramp power up and down. On Boost, the Shark IZ420UKT managed a massive 219AW. A light on the head lets you know the level of power it’s working at, based on how much dust it can detect and changes depending on whatever cleaning challenges it faces. There are also selectable Eco and Boost modes available if you want to take control. Eco can be useful for delicate items, such as vacuuming a keyboard, while the Boost mode is a good choice for when there’s a lot of mess to deal with.

In terms of battery life, the vacuum performed reasonably well. At full power it lasted 10mins 47secs, which is slightly short of the competition. In Economy mode, however, it was only a few seconds short of the more expensive Dyson Gen5detect, while in Clean Sense mode it lasted almost 41 minutes. We don’t move the vacuum during this test, so we’d expect that time to drop in real-world use as the vacuum encounters more dirt and increases the suction. It’s a triumph of power, features and design.
There’s a large 0.7-litre bin on this model, which has an eject button to push open the flap at the front. As long as the Shark IZ420UKT was pushed into a bin, I could easily empty it without spilling dust everywhere. And while we love our pets unconditionally, they can be a bit smelly sometimes, but with its Anti-Odour Technology, the Shark Stratos protects against bad odours inside the vacuum for a fresher-smelling home– instead of leaving you with a lingering musty smell that makes you question if your home is actually any cleaner afterwards. Its performance in our tests rivals that of vastly more expensive models, and I love the fact that you don’t need to switch the floor head over when moving from one surface to another. And, with Flexology, you can bend the wand to reach under low furniture such as beds, sofas, and coffee tables.

As you can see from our chart above, this isn’t as powerful as Dyson’s latest Gen5detect, and it falls behind the power of the cordless upright ICZ300UKT, though it is more powerful than the Hoover HF9. And to give reassurance to allergy sufferers, Shark’s Anti-Allergen Complete Seal captures and traps 99.9%*** of dust and allergens inside the vacuum, so they won’t be released into the air. This performance even beats the Dyson Gen5detect, which left more Cheerios behind on a single pass across hard floor, although it, too, didn’t struggle to collect the remainder on a second pass.
