About this deal

I think the plastic wheels do a good job of keeping the lawn feed spreader rolling along. I would have preferred to see pneumatic wheels but I know that that would have almost certainly increased the price, so I get why Scotts chose what they did. If however, the weather is likely to be dry, windy or warm or you cannot water then always feed once the seed has germinated. Use the Starter Fertiliser for this. Feeding the New Seeded Lawn – Covered Make sure that the materials are corrosion resistant. You can help to further prevent rust/corrosion by limiting the spreaders exposure to the elements. Keep the lawn spreader dry and out of direct sunlight as much as possible to prolong the life of the metal and plastic components.

As you can imagine, there’s a bit of a workout involved in pushing this fertiliser spreader around, especially when it’s full; the unit alone weighs 12.3 kg. However, it’s a great option for gardeners who don’t want to keep stopping and starting to top up the spreader. Specification: Spreading width: 122-340 cm , Capacity: N/A , Recommended lawn area: least 100 m² , When to use: March to November This is a well-constructed product, and when compared to the well know Scott Easy Green, it more than holds its own. That’s not too bad at all for a product that costs significantly less. If using a rotary/broadcast spreader, you may find that you use less seeds/fertiliser because it casts them further but less densely. You can still achieve a denser application with a rotary spreader, but you’ll need to complete more passes of the lawn which will take more time. The advantage of a drop spreader is that you have much more control over where the contents are being put down, and this makes them better for using on the edges of lawns or near garden ponds so you don’t contaminate the water accidentally with chemicals.

Feeding the New Seeded Lawn – Uncovered

To control weeds on lawns before the new grass is established, consider alternative measures like spot treatments. You can also manually uproot the weed plants if the infestation is still in the early stages. Fertilizer complex’s come in a range of blends using three to four different minerals. The most common types found in fertilizer are phosphorous, nitrogen, and potassium. Nitrogen is the mineral responsible for promoting growth in your grass, and giving it that deep green color every gardener loves.

Specification: Spreading width: 45 cm , Capacity: N/A , Recommended lawn area: least 100 m² , When to use: March to November Many gardeners often find themselves unsure of how long they’re supposed to wait until they can apply weed and feed to their lawns after planting grass seed. Conversely, the issue may be how long one’s supposed to wait to plant grass seed after spraying weed and feed. For both concerns, the answer largely revolves around the type of herbicides found in different weed and feed products. Can you put weed and feed on grass seed? Completely empty the spreader weighs in at 3.4kg but even with a full load of feed it doesn’t feel cumbersome and my wife found it very easy to use despite being only 5.5ft and being a dainty little thing. Be aware that artificial fertilisers take a lot of energy to manufacture and may have detrimental effects on the environment, so only apply if required and use the minimum amount to keep your grass in good shape – see our guide to using fertilisersand our guide to organic gardening

When to Switch to Seasonal Fertiliser

Our lawn care and plant fertilisers promote growth in your garden. From lawn treatment and manure to plant food and fertiliser, we have everything you need to keep your lawn and flowers thriving year-round. Improve your soil quality with garden manure, ideal for feeding established plants and helping them flourish. If using a drop spreader, the application will be more concentrated and therefore you may use more product. You need to be especially careful not to stop still when using a drop spreader – if the aperture is open, the seeds/fertiliser will be heaped in one place.

The majority of these machine come with instructions that recommend which of the variable settings should be used for different purposes. These generally include information about recommended walking pace to ensure good results. Drop spreaders, as you can guess, ‘drop’ the fertiliser straight down and not out to the sides. While this makes them a little slower to cover the same area when compared to a rotary model, it also makes controlling where the feed goes much easier. This is particularly useful for smaller gardens, and for working on parts of the lawn that are next to vulnerable areas such as flower beds and ponds. The Gardena features a good-sized carry handle that has two of the main controls situated on it. On top is a button you press with your thumb to open up the hole and allow the contents to flow through to the spreading mechanism, and on the front of the handle is a selector switch with four settings that controls how much fertilizer will be allowed to pass through when the thumb button is pressed. In terms of capacity I have laid in easily a good couple of kilo of seed, maybe even two! – reloading every few minutes doesn’t feel a burden at all when you’re covering so much ground:

Please be aware that the battery and charger don’t come with the feeder as standard, and you will have to pay extra for them, quite a bit extra actually, and that is the biggest flaw of the Einhell Power X-change feeder. It’s an excellent product and gives you a really even and uniform spread. It is also very easy to use and requires no physical shaking or turning of handles either. However, it is quite expensive when you compare it to other handheld lawn feed spreaders, and I think that unless you have money to burn, or you plan on using more tools from the same range, the price might put you off. The feeder hole in the bottom of the 18 litre capacity hopper is opened and closed using an ergonomically designed trigger found on the handlebars. I really liked the way this worked and felt very natural when you used it. Specification: Spreading width: 5 metres , Capacity: 3.3 liters , Recommended lawn area: up to around 800 m² , When to use: year-round use Applying weed and feed is pretty straightforward, but there are a few essential details to remember, as it is a chemical product. While most lawn feed spreaders are quite basic tools, with few moving parts, there’s nothing wrong with going a bit more ‘hi-tech’ with the Power X-change feeder from Einhell.
