About this deal

One user states: “Most weeks I would race Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday. Crazy? Not with this stuff. I can go hard on the bike day after day. Never getting that soreness that forced me to rest. I also used to struggle with leg cramps and while I still get them sometimes, using PR lotion has drastically reduced them.” Final Thoughts Introduction: Oral bicarbonate loading improves the buffering of metabolic acidosis and may improve exercise performance but can also result in gastric distress. Momentous’ PR Lotion contains a novel composition intended to provide a transdermal delivery vehicle for sodium bicarbonate which could allow the same ergogenic effect without the gastric distress. The present study explored the effect of transdermal delivery of sodium bicarbonate in a resting condition.

Because of the reduced inflammation and muscle soreness between training sessions, PR Lotion can improve the rate of recovery or readiness to train. That is, diminished muscle soreness in the days following intense exercise, aids in the recovery of muscle function which can only enhance the quality of the subsequent training session. The improved readiness to train, combined with increased buffering potential in the muscle, promotes the maintenance of high training loads or high-quality training efforts. This means that the athlete is more ready and able to handle the required or prescribed training loads. PR Lotion can, therefore, help an athlete be more physically capable of performing the intended training session, which will allow for overall superior adaptations to the prescribed training. As alluded to, this actually wasn’t the first study testing the benefits of PR Lotion. The 2021 trial references another from 2018, which, according to a blog post from the company’s manufacturers, is awaiting submission for publication. However, results from this trial and two related poster presentations are summarized in the blog post, so let’s look at what they found.

Siegler, J.C., et al., Mechanistic Insights into the Efficacy of Sodium Bicarbonate Supplementation to Improve Athletic Performance. Sports Med Open, 2016. 2(1): p. 41. Even though the performance benefits of bicarbonate are clear, the potential for negative side effects in the gut can significantly discourage athletes from ingesting sodium bicarbonate. In fact, to combat the negative side effects, athletes include extensive and sometimes tedious protocols or strategies for sodium bicarbonate consumption into their pre-training or pre-competition routine. The timing of ingestion before exercise, the quantity of sodium bicarb ingested, and the “loading” strategy are all necessary considerations to carefully plan before ingesting sodium bicarbonate for the performance benefits without the negative side effects. Adding to the complexity, ingestion strategies need to be highly personalized to each athlete, as individuals can have varying responses or sensitivities to oral sodium bicarbonate. According to one study, participants experienced a 53.5% reduction in post-workout DOMS and a heart rate that was 3.1% lower than the control group.

I've delved into this a bit deeper and there are plenty of studies to suggest that taking around 0.3g per kg 60-180 minutes before high-intensity exercise can enhance performance by decreasing the acidity of working muscles by buffering its production. In fact, professional athletes have been using this legal supplement since the 1970s.Note: if you didn’t read the series of articles I wrote last year you can get them here. They include a lot of specific performance numbers which may be of interest. What Is It? The lotion comprises 33% sodium bicarbonate and this active ingredient, when absorbed into the muscles, neutralises the high levels of burning, fatigue-inducing lactic acid that is produced during intense and enduring exercise. By managing the acidity levels in the muscles, research has shown this lotion to increase training capacity, improve muscle efficiency and lower soreness post-exercise. A performance lotion that is applied pre-workout to the muscles to help any athlete realise greater success and personal sporting achievements

Research exploring the impact of PR Lotion on DOMS examined cyclists performing a series of very high intensity exercise conditions, including a ramp protocol of progressively increasing intensity to near maximal exercise, a 30 second sprint, and a 5 min time trail with only 5 min of rest between conditions. The cyclists then completed a muscle soreness survey for 2 days following the exercise session. The findings, presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in May 2018, demonstrated PR Lotion substantially reduced scores of delayed onset muscle soreness compared to the placebo control lotion. In fact, between the first and second days following the intense exercise session, the cyclists reported a 34% increase in muscle soreness while using the placebo lotion and a 54% decrease in muscle soreness while using the PR Lotion. Research has shown the lotion to help athletes complete 25% more high-intensity intervals to exhaustion and reduce DOMS (post-workout muscle soreness) by 53% Amp Human's Science Advisory Board chairman Dr Brad Wilkins helps explain the science of bicarb, why PR Lotion works and why it's a must have training product for any athlete. All studies were approved by the Institutional Review Board at the University of Oregon and were performed in accordance with the principles outlined by the Declaration of Helsinki. Written informed consent was obtained from all subjects after a verbal and written briefing of all experimental procedures. 2.2 Study designThe current study was designed to explore the effectiveness of PR Lotion as a transdermal delivery vehicle for sodium bicarbonate to skeletal muscle under a resting condition. According to the manufacturer, PR Lotion’s ingredients encapsulate hydrophilic molecules (e.g., sodium bicarbonate) for paracellular delivery, penetrate the stratum corneum, disrupt the junctional proteins of the skin barrier, and transiently create a paracellular pathway for the local delivery of molecular substances into the underlying tissues. While we did not directly test these claims, consistent with our hypothesis, the increase in pH of the intramuscular dialysate and serum are in support of PR Lotion’s proposed function. Indeed, the 0.13 increase in pH in dialysate from a baseline of 6.85 translates to a ∼28% reduction in [H +]. Changes in serum pH were smaller (∼9% reduction in [H+]) yet consistent with the anticipated alkalotic effect of PR Lotion application, increasing pH. Primary and secondary outcome variables were analyzed with a mixed linear regression model to determine time course effects and presented as a line of best fit and upper and lower confidence limits for the regression. In addition, change (Δ) from baseline to end-of-study for each outcome variable was tested by univariate t-test. Lastly, to explore the possibility of a dose-pH relation, the absolute dosage of 80gPR Lotion applied, made relative to participant’s bodyweight, was compared to the reported change in pH of the intramuscular dialysate via Pearson correlation. All variables are presented as mean ± standard error of the mean (SE). Significance was accepted at p< 0.05. 3 Results 3.1 Primary outcome variable: pH Comments that harass other posters will be deleted. Please be respectful toward other contributors.

In fact, over 40 years of scientific research (and athlete practice) overwhelmingly supports the benefits of sodium bicarbonate ingestion for improving acid-base balance and enhancing human performance in sport. Despite the clear evidence for performance benefits, gastrointestinal distress is a common side effect. This makes sodium bicarbonate ingestion impractical for most athletes to use regularly. PR Lotion is the first and only topical lotion to deliver sodium bicarbonate directly through the skin, circumventing the limitations at the gut.
