Octavia, a sophisticated ostrich with a French accent, brought an air of grace and charm to the programme. But he is sad because he never meets them in real life. But then Tortoise has an idea... Every time the phone rings, Hartley can’t find it, and by the time he does, it’s in a different place. Johnny takes Topov on a visit to the Queen's palaces, where he sees soldiers on duty. So Topov decides to be one too, and guard the gate of Pipkins....The fact that Tortoise is slow has Hartley, Topov and Pig worried, but is slowness a problem for Tortoise? Very many thanks to Nigel Plaskitt for this information. Sorry if we've missed you off. Please let us know. LUNCHTIME, NEW Year’s Day, 1973, and what do we find? “This is Mr. Pipkin’s workshop. Come on in and look around. See all those puppets? Well, Mr. Pipkin made them and they are rather special, for they can dance and sing just like humans. Oh yes, the chap with the saw is Johnny, Mr. Pipkin’s assistant, who has just completed his first animal, an impressive dragon. As you look around the workshop, you’ll notice many fascinating things which fit into the stories you can see during the coming weeks.” An inauspicious billing for INIGO PIPKIN (as it then was), a MICHAEL JEANS production starring good old GEORGE WOODBRIDGE, original voice of Mr Kipling’s cakes and the innkeeper in any number of Hammer Dracula films as the titular marionettesmith, and WAYNE “ACE REPORTS” LAREYA as Johnny. The theme music was a sixties-type song “It’s Inigo Pipkin, Inigo Pipkin, Inigo the puppet may-kuh. Oh-oooh!” etc. Hartley wants to be an astronomer, but there is more to being an astronomer than looking through a telescope. You have to know when to look, where to look, and it's better if you're not helped by Topov................... I went out to Elstree for an appointment with this producer,” Nigel recounts. “He said can you do character voices? I said yes, and he said, good. He gave me a short written description about a brown hare and that was it. He didn’t even ask me to do the voice – just took my word for it.
