About this deal

With a metal chassis and metal ports, the switch feels sturdy, though the glossy finish doesn’t feel as professional as either of the Netgear switches.

The GS108PEv3 does supportIEEE 802.3af (== IEEE 802.3at Type 1) devices only. The max PoE budget is 53W, this allows at least three ports to guarantee the 15.4W Class 0 or Class 3 device. If you cannot ping the switch, your computer may be configured in a different IP network to the switch. Try setting your computer with a static IP in the same IP network as the switch. The time-out period of an IGMP host is not exactly 260 seconds but could be anywhere between 260 and 520 seconds. If you can ping the switch, you may need to upgrade the firmware on the switch. For this you will need to use the ProSAFE Plus Utility on a Windows-based PC. See Method 2 here. To my knowledge, the Smart Managed Plus models don't have controls for port enable/disable or PoE enable/disable.

Random (non-PoE) Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, or Gigabit Ethernet devices (for examplea LAN port on your router) should be able to establish a link on the PoE ports (Left Speed & Activity port LED) as well as on the non-PoE ports (Right Status Port LED) as per the NETGEAR 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Smart Managed Plus Switch with 4-Port PoE GS108PEv3 Installation Gui... . While both Netgear switches use 12V power supplies @ 0.5A, the TP-Link is specced at 9V 0.6A. Personally I prefer the standard 12V setup since it’s easier to find a replacement adapter should the original one fail, and you don’t have to worry about an end user accidentally plugging in a 12V power supply into a 9V switch, which could damage it. If you do the math, 12V x 0.5A = 6W, and 9V x0.6A = 5.4W, so all three switches should be similar in power usage. We shall see later if this really is the case. Fixes the issue where the settings for the 802.1Q VLAN Advanced function (in the device UI, select VLAN > 802.1Q > Advanced) are missing in the German version. Industry-leading 5-year warranty and unlimited technical support. Technical Support: +1 866 225 8139; Hotline en Français: +1 855 987 5465. Added a control option to disable or enable file transfer via TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol), under System > Management > Switch Managed Mode). Default is Disable. The most common port of failure in most types of compact fanless network equipment that I’ve observed over the years is the electrolytic capacitors. While all caps will dry out eventually when they pass their rated lifespan, there are three main ways their lifespan is impacted: good design of the circuit, operating temperature, and quality of capacitors used.

Firmware version 2.06.24 includes three firmware images. Each image supports a different language for the device UI: English, German, or Japanese. The supported language is identified by the suffix of the image filename: From analyzing the advertised features, our own performance benchmarks, and taking each switch apart to see how well they are built and the quality of components used, we’ve come to the following conclusions.

You can try to reset the switch to factory default settings by holding the Factory Reset button on the switch for 10 seconds. Note that this will reset the configuration of the switch to default settings. Once done, re-try the steps above.

Any ideas on the reset switch not appearing to function? Is there another way to trigger the reset? IGMP dynamic router port does not timeout exactly at 300 seconds. It could be anywhere from 300 to 600 seconds. Will this work as a "dumb" switch?I don't consider a "yes" answer as a solution, but only as an indication of whether I can use it in this capacity. I bought these particular switches for VLAN and POE functionality. I have them tied to a Cisco 4948, and I want the VLANs. Netgear ProSAFE plus Configuration Utility - permitting the microcontroller is still partially alive, and the NDSP protocol access wasn't disabled. Define "PoE device" - make, model, firmware, link to product, link to documentation, data sheet, ...

A configuration that is obtained from the Plus Utility cannot be used by device UI, and the other way around. V2.06.16 has 3 firmware images. Each supports a different language for the WEB GUI: English, German, and Japanese. The supported language is identified by the suffix of image filename: V2.06.10 has 3 firmware images. Each supports a different language for the WEB GUI: English, German, and Japanese. I opened up the GS108 expecting to see generic electrolytic capacitors like older versions of this switch I’ve opened up in the past, and the other two switches in this roundup. Instead, there weren’t any – at all! Let me reiterate that for you – the most likely component to fail in these switches simply isn’t present – which means that the switch should pretty much last forever. The time-out period of a dynamic IGMP router port is not exactly 300 seconds but could be anywhere between 300 and 600 seconds.
