Walters, Barry (1995). "Eurythmics". In Weisbard, Eric; Marks, Craig (eds.). Spin Alternative Record Guide. Vintage Books. pp.135–136. ISBN 0-679-75574-8. The album proper needed no such artificial goosing, as it was well-received and sold more copies than Sweet Dreams. In the end, Lennox wasn’t going to give up her career, but she would be on her terms — making the albums she wanted when she wanted to make them (1992’s classic Diva being the best of the bunch). She made sure to prioritize family in the process. She also spent more of her time on charitable endeavors and activism, which have been more of her focus over the last 20 years. This archaic-looking orange box is a primitive sampling drum machine from Cornwall, England. Although somewhat clunky, the MCS Percussion Computer became Dave Stewart’s secret weapon and he used it on both Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) and Touch. When last we left Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart (collectively known as Eurythmics), they had survived a stint in the failed British band The Tourists and a mostly-ignored debut album (In the Garden) (1981) to release Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (1983), the LP that put them over the top. Touch, released late in 1983, was the album that would make sure they'd stay there for the next decade and beyond. It was a #1 album in the U.K. and a #10 album in the U.S., and was eventually certified as Platinum in both countries, also going Double-Platinum in Canada and Gold in Germany. Additionally, it was named as one of Rolling Stone magazine's Top 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003, and again in 2012 when they revised their list. Touch made Eurythmics international superstars.

The frantic squall of Caveman Head is a highlight, a dizzying mix of skittering drums, spiralling guitars and a woozy vocal from Lennox. Meanwhile, the French language oddity Sing-Sing’s keyboard refrain is certainly on nodding acquaintance with Gary Numan’s Cars. Annie and Dave took the lessons and electronic sound they discovered in Germany with Conny Plank and melded it to an instinctive British pop sensibility for their second studio album. Stewart ditched the guitars and taught himself how to program and play keyboards from scratch. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - Remix (EP)/01. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) [Steve Angello Remix Edit].mp3 That’s when we decided to take even more control by actually getting second hand equipment and stop using traditional studios,” Stewart told Super Deluxe Edition in 2019. “We spent months working on the Sweet Dreams album without the cost hanging over our heads and I think that allowed us to get lost in sound and find our way to what I used to call electro-soul.”In the garden is a gutsy post-punk collection that boasts muscle, angular riffs and soulful vocals’ Scaping, Peter, ed. (1984). "Top 100 LPs: 1983". BPI Year Book 1984. British Phonographic Industry. pp.44–45. ISBN 0-906154-04-9.

TheSweet Dreamsalbum spawned a phenomenon, with Annie and Dave swept away in the eye of a pop hurricane. Now one of the most iconic duos on the planet,Touchwas written on the road during Eurythmics’ global Sweet Dreams Tour, then recorded and mixed in just three weeks at their London studio, The Church. There’s the brusque guitar stomp of Belinda with Lennox’s multi-layered vocals sitting atop some post-punk guitars and heavy riffing of Stewart. It feels like a more refined cousin of Keith Levene’s razorcut riffing on PiL’s Public Image single from three years earlier.

Be Youself Tonight (Remastered & Expanded)/Cover/Eurythmics-Be_Yourself_Tonight-Interior_Frontal.jpg Right By Your Side” changed things up by tossing calypso into the mix. Its sunny pop and joyous lyrical disposition are a 180 from the previous single. It’s perfectly pleasant, if a little too chipper for its own good. And I’m not sure that a woman who grew up working class in Aberdeen, Scotland and a man who grew up in wealth in Sunderland, England are the first two to put me in mind of the Caribbean. Rather, it sounds like something you’d hear at their version of a Margaritaville restaurant.

The Church was fine for a duo, but, with only four mics available, tight for an orchestra. Eventually, they jerry-rigged a set-up where cello players were positioned in the bathroom with violinists in the hall and arranger Michael Kamen conducting from a spiral staircase. The First Cut” goes right for the dancefloor, driven by Stewart’s guitars. He wasn’t going to get a call to join the JBs, but he got the job done.
