About this deal

See my full review for details but it remains the best value in budget, wheel-on smart trainers – not only the cheapest, but with wide support and compatibility (especially after Tacx was swallowed by Garmin). Part of the value prop is the included front wheel riser that, uniquely, doubles as part of the storage system: it clips onto the trainer when not in use and has a built-in handle for carrying the whole unit, with the legs folded up.

I also tried disconnecting the trainer from its power supply and reconnecting after 5 minutes hoping that this would reboot the trainer. The result was speeds of over 100 km/h and power of 500 to 1300 Watts. Utterly ridiculous values. Elite had no knowledge of this one. For me, in my testing, I used Zwift and TrainerRoad as my two main apps (which are the two main apps I use personally). In the case of Zwift, I used it in regular riding mode (non-workout mode, aka SIM mode) as well as ERG mode (workout mode). Whereas in the case of TrainerRoad I used it in a structured workout mode (ERG mode). I dig into the nuances of these both within the power accuracy section. Lastly, this is the one category I don’t have a ton of riding time on either of those units. Both of them have been at trade shows or the like. ANT+ FE-C (Trainer Control): This is for controlling the trainer via ANT+ from apps and head units (with cadence/power data). Read tons about it here. That’s about the only real tangible differences between them. They all have about the same road feel (and each company will tell you their road feel is better). They all have ANT+ FE-C and Bluetooth Smart control, and they all work with Zwift and TrainerRoad. Now, I start to do some light climbing while increasing my power, and you can see there’s Between all these standards you can basically connect to anything and everything you’d ever want to. Be it a bike computer or watch, or an app – it’ll be supported. In fact, Elite’s really been one of the leaders for years in supporting the various standards – including FTMS. Only to realize you had it right the first time, but just didn’t think to undo the spinning knob all the way to make room for the tire. Bluetooth Smart FTMS (Trainer Control): This allows apps to control the Tuo over Bluetooth Smart (with cadence/power data)

This is a super basic trainer mat, which is exactly what you'll see me use. All it does is stop sweat for getting places it shouldn't (it also helps with vibrations too). Joe, it is entirely common for shifting to vary a bit between a bike and different wheels. Wheel-off trainers fall into the same category. Direct drive turbo trainers are the undisputed last word in indoor bike training, but the one area that they do lose out to classic or wheel-on trainers such as the Elite Tuo is portability.

The Tuo is slightly more complicated. Due to its highly aesthetic design, there are many parts that need to be put together but it will take you about 5 minutes if you follow the instructions correctly. Anyone found a sollution yet? Really bad service that they don`t reply over here. I hope can fix the problem fast.

However, what caught my eye is that your left-side is measuring a fair bit lower than I’d expect (on Favero Duo’s) – but in particular, that’s oddly flipped on your Giant (where your right side is measuring a fair bit lower). Typically speaking I don’t see people flip-flop dominancy that much. They tend to increase/decrease the dominancy, but not usually flip it the other way 10-12w per leg. If we ignore the Giant data, then the Favero and H3 are actually within the realm of reason of drivetrain efficiency losses combined with accuracy claims (right at the edge, but within the envelope nonetheless). Now, if you’re riding race wheels with expensive race tires – you’ll have to balance the much higher cost of most race tires. To figure out which one you need, it asks you if you’re using 28” tires or not. Ok…so…umm…I have no idea how big a road tire is. Seriously, I don’t. I know some mountain bike tires are 29’ers (short for 29”), and I know that my road bike tire is a 700c. But 28”? No effin clue. Turns out – in case you’re curious, a 700c road bike tire is 28”. So no, it’s not bigger than 28”. This means interactivity on apps like Zwift, TrainerRoad, Kinomap, The Sufferfest, Fulgaz and plenty of others will work as normal. Those apps can control the trainer up to an incline of 10% grade, and a max power of 1,250 watts (at 40KPH), or an unachievable 2,050w (at 60KPH). Though, I suspect your rear tire would probably melt through the tostapane at 60KPH. But yeah, technically it was tested by Elite to those levels.
