About this deal

This was the first channel strip that I ever owned. I've used it to record podcast dialog, studio vocals, and guitar. It's reliably gotten the job done, time and time again. I'm sure some 'expert' could tell you that the pre-amp used here isn't as good as ______ because of _______, but whatever! We recommend adjusting the Drive to around 3 and Density to around 3 as well. Tweak these settings to develop a sound that's really good for your station and your style of voice. De-Esser Well, if it works it works - as I said, I don't really see how but I can certainly see it might not cost you any in that circumstance!

What is an "enhancer" exactly? I'm not aware of many, other channel strips that would feature a function. If you want an exciter - again, better done in mix in software (or hardware I suppose).

Customer Added Media

However, the Gear4music extended warranty scheme provides an enhanced service, and is designed to offer a higher level of protection than many 'free' warranties offered by some retailers and manufacturers. Collection and delivery costs are included for the first 2 years in the event of an item becoming faulty If you're recording a vocalist with a wispy voice using a cheap microphone that doesn't handle sibilance well, you'll love the De-Esser. Don't overdo it, or your vocalist will sound like they have a lisp. The enhancer is what give you that " radio sound" that broadcasters look for. It enhances the highs and lows of your voice by taking audio and enhancing the levels. The most exciting thing about the DBX 286S is that it can be used in both amateur home studio settings and professional settings. It is affordable even for non-pro users who are just seeking a little more versatility in their setup, but it delivers enough quality that professionals will happily use it too.

As it stands I can only recommend this channel strip to one group of users: podcasters/streamers for non professional use. So you've made it through the whole device. I could have just told you where I set all my levels, but unless you're using the exact same equipment in a similar environment as me, your settings are going to need to be a little different. I've done a fair amount of VO, but not generally self-recording. I've never really felt the need to have it processed on the way in (if I'm doing VO, I'll generally record flat anyway). I have a number of preset plugin chains I can then drop it into, dependent on the end result required (commercial, documentary or whatever). The best way to set this is to say " S-ssss", then adjust it until you're happy with the result and it works with your voice.
